Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Carbon Fork Damage? Help

Hi I just bought a new trek 1.5 a couple of days ago. It has a bontrager carbon fork. Today, most of the way through a ride, I made a detour to a store. While leaving the parking lot, I hit a speed bump going probably 5-10mph. I didn't get out of the saddle for it (wasn't thinking) and hit it a little hard. There was some sort of popping/slight crunch noise that came out of the front. I'm fairly certain it came from where the fork meets the rest of the frame. There aren't any external signs of damage. Is there really a chance for a problem with it? I thought carbon would be strong enough to take an impact that is this minor...
Thanks for the help!

Bikes: Trek

head back to the lbs and own up to what happened. they will look it over and let you know if it needs repaired/replaced.

it might suck to lay out cash for them to look it over but that's piece of mind you should have when riding.

Most likely if nothing is cracked that bump sure didn't do that the headset preload is not correct (loose) and the noise was it compressing inside the headset and made a thumping noise have the LBS check the headset preload make sure it's set correctly and not to loose.

If there is no obvious visible fracture in the fork I believe it to be the carbon giving when you hit the speed hump.
I had a Colnago CLX that used to make a cracking noise when I hit pot holes etc.... It used to totally freak me out but was told it was the carbon doing its thing, Flexing/giving as it is meant to. The impact is transfered from the fork up into the headset making a cacking sound. I do not believe you have anything to worry about.

Carbon parts do not make cracking noises even when flexing! if I had a carbon frame that made noises like that whle I rode it I would not be riding it!
Something is making the noise and it is not a carbon part thats on good condition, it's coming from someplace else.
