WEEKEND CYCLING - June 4/5

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

WEEKEND CYCLING - June 4/5

It's the first weekend of winter!! Winter started June 1, and was probably the warmest day we've had in a while. Pity I couldn't ride that day.

If you're in the northern hemisphere, what is it like there? I'm seeing some reports of snow in some places and heat waves in others.

Where did you cycle this weekend? How far? What was it like?

_______________

Saturday - First ride of winter!! A somewhat hilly local 43.5 km loop. I was tired to begin with and then kind of settled into the ride.

Why confused?

This is the usual weekly Weekend Cycling thread which has been going on for years now.

Hopefully I'll be doing 45m with a group this afternoon, and a 25-30m tomorrow.

Yep! June 1 was the first day of winter. And it looks like there's a good chance of snow on the mountains this week.

If this heatwave in the South continues, I may have to head to Aussieland this summer.

We had one of the coldest Mays on record in this part of Australia ... I think it was the coldest in 40 years.

Sunday - it's a chilly one out there today, but we'll be getting ready to ride shortly. We're thinking of a couple local roads ... one which we haven't ridden in ages.

Gah. Group ride ended up getting rained out, so I soloed 19 miles instead.

Hopefully tomorrow yields better results.

Sunday - ‎47.7 km bicycle ride on some local roads on a chilly winter Sunday afternoon.

At the turn-around point on one of the roads ... yes, I'm wearing booties. The high for the day only reached 8C.

Rowan took this photo: The Shadow of the Bicycle

We stirred up a field of cockatoos as we cycled by ... they are in flight here ...

120 km this morning. Last 40 in a tropical storm.

Things that work well in the rain: completely soaked ipod shuffles, swissstop yellows on carbon rims.

Probably nothing for me this weekend. Decided to change my bottom bracket yesterday (probably about 12,000-13,000 miles on it). Removed the crank, and attempted to unscrew the cups. The NDS moved a little, but the DS not at all. Took it to the LBS and they struggled mightily and had to use a breaker bar to get them to loosen. There was quite a bit of dirt in the shell and the threads were a little messed up. So, I just left it with them to tap the BB. Not sure if I'll get it back today or tomorrow.

EDIT: Managed to get in 41 miles this afternoon. Got the bike back and installed the new shimano 105 BB. Uh-oh, no matter how hard I push, the crank will not slide through the BB. Apparently the MegaExo BB and the Shimano Hollowtech II 105 BB are not compatible (i'd read many pages on the interwebz that said they were). Therefore, I gave the old FSA BB a good cleaning, greased everything and reinstalled it.

Did a leisurely 100k yesterday, a Populaire. One of the slower rando guys that doesn't ride much was there, and so I rode with him.

Did 36 miles here locally today, posted the picture in the "oddball things" thread.

Sign said 95 degrees when I went past it, it's getting hot here now.

Finally finally finally it is really nice and warm here!

Saturday: 106 miles & 7200' with a Denver mixed-gender club, tried to hang with the fast guys, shelled on the rollers on the approach to the real climb 12 miles in (grrr), then hooked up with other drop-ees to complete the ride in what was a really fast time for me, 6:46 ride time.

Today: 75 miles & 5200', with my Boulder women's club, well, only about 25 of it was with the whole group, one other gal and I peeled off for extra miles and extra climbing.

Stick a fork in me, I'm done.

I've done that before ... rode several km to the start of a group ride, rode the group ride, and then finished off with a ride on my own. It makes for a nice mix of group riding and individual riding.

Well its mainly hot here in SE Virginia, but with a breeze it can be nice... I put 1 hour in the saddle every evening doing 15-16 miles. I'll be 51 this month and after being out of cycling for 20+ years up until 4 months ago I'm working at getting into better shape...
