Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Going to Hawaii, I want to take my bike...any suggestions?

Has anybody had any experience flying with their bike?(on a plane, not over the hood of a car) I just found out work wants me to go to Hawaii for the next 3 weeks and I've been riding consistently and would like to keep it up while I'm gone. I've seen these bike bags with the roller wheels. I just wonder how safe it is to check it on a plane, going through baggage handling and claim...etc. If you have any experience or suggestions, post em up! Thanks

did you put it on the plane as luggage? I'm going to call the airline once my flight is booked to see what the policy is for fragile luggage is. I worked in Denver earlier this year and noticed they have a separate system for skis and snowboards

renting will be cheaper anyway. A bike box that you'd trust a good bike to will set you back several hundred dollars. And the airlie fees are absurd. Often over $100 each way.

Bring your shoes, helmet & pedals, then rent a road bike.

Anyone have a link to the bike shop on Maui that rents out Cannondales? I'm planning to hit Haleakala in Sept.

+1

Did that in Rome the first week of April. Since you'll be there for several weeks, negotiate for a long-term rental. Be sure to bring your gloves and riding sunglasses too.

For future reference, Frontier is the way to go for bike flight travel. Not sure if this is a permanent policy or not:

bikes basically fly free or as regular baggage

Just make sure bike+carrier does not exceed 50lbs.

I believe Virgin does not charge an extra either. Flying with a Bicycle - Virgin Atlantic. you may have to rent/buy a carrying case though.

Trico Iron Case FTW. Won't help for this trip but it's nice to have one around. Got my bike to France and back with one and it's great.

Man really good info here, I leave in a few hours and I'm throwing my gear in the bag now. I love frontier BTW, and I've been looking at cases simply because I fly to 80% of the places I work and I'm gone for good periods at a time...i'm sure I'll post from the big island to let you guys know how it goes. and I would guess if your bike with carrier exceeds 50lbs you'd seriously need to re-evaluate the bike you're riding...I've got 34ish lbs of wiggle room at this point

You'd be surprised. Trico Iron case has a listed weight of 31 lbs. Bike Pro USA race case (which I have and like) is a couple of punds above that.

16 lb bike, 30 pound case, doesn't leave too much wiggle room for seat bag with tools, spare, etc, helmet, shoes glove, pump etc.

I recall the bike shops in Kailua Kona, where they start the Iron Man. They have really nice bikes as rentals.

dang, I try to travel really light...I've become somewhat "pro" at not paying all the extra baggage fees and have even managed to get some upgrades for free...people don't realize sometimes all you have to do is ask! But I can see how a hard case would obviously weight more.....unless IT WAS CARBON F1BERZ!!! somebody should get on that one...oh and the case should woosh when rolling it through security...

If you want to travel light with a bike and you're going to do it often, the answer is S&S couplers. Bike will pack in a standard 26x26x10 suitcase.
