Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

PCAD Bait - should this be believed?

https://velonews.competitor.com/2011/...2%80%A6_178477

I figure put this out there, and let the posts begin.

Given Garmin's HRM straps never work with their own devides (a large on-line retailer told me never to buy their straps, and get a CycleOps strap instead), I am guessing the # of problems with these if they do come out initially are going to be numerous.

Mine never picked up my heart rate period. I had the delux strap and Edge 500. Bought the Cycleops strap....flawless.

I like how they are mum on specific details, such as which pedal system. We are 1/2 way through 2011, if they were going to release the pedal system in the fall of 2011, you would think they would have already displayed the pedals at a trade show in order to build up some advance anticipation and consumer demand.

Plus - it allows them to grab the attention of Velonews etc... and then publicly announce new versions of their watches.

Using the strap that came with the Edge bundle. It has worked for me! Was there a battery in it?

A lot of people had problems with the "premium" strap. It is a known problem and Garmin will replace the strap if they are contacted about it.

Please note other thread with Pcad now raving about how essential it is to have DI2. How many old threads are there where he previously bagged the whole concept of DI2?

So we can predict with a fair degree of certainty that he will bag this Garmin stuff until it is released, then continue to bag it for another couple of years as unnecessary, then buy it and it will be essential.

The mind of Pcad works in convoluted ways. No early adopter is he.

I dont know - even though Di2 has been around a while, I still consider anyone with it to be an early adopter because the price is still beyond normal consumer logic. He just poo-poos loudly, then early-adopts.

The cheapo strap looks exactly like my Cycleops strap, but with a Garmin logo.

I have both the standard HRM and the Premium HRM. I've never used the standard one (came with a Garmin Edge bundle), but the Premium one has worked perfectly and without any issues. It's so comfortable I can't tell I'm wearing a HRM.

Is there a known batch range of these defective Premium HRMs? It would be nice to know whether or not mine is prone to failure.

That's because I believe they are the same. Not a ton of people in the ANT+ HR device industry. These guys all purchase from OEM's as add on sensors. I even believe that there was a display at the ANT+ booth at interbike that had 5 or 6 identical straps with different logos on them.

Now apply this to the Pedal Based power meter (which is a far more complex, and much less proven technology, with a history of failing to ever finally work effectively enough for a first generation offering to the public.

My other problem - in racing, especially in the states where criterium racing is so prevalent, people clip their pedals all the time in technical corners. I am not sold that this technology is going to be good for your standard amateur racer (now triathlete or TT bike...maybe).

NEVER had trouble with a Garmin HRM strap or unit. Only time is when it was too loose once.

As mentioned above, the HRM sensor is apparently not a Garmin design... Anyway, I'm skeptical about these pedals, but I don't think it's right to damn them before they are released. Let's see what Garmin and friends can cook up...!

Also... years ago, heart rate monitors were obscenely expensive. Even a simple bike speedometer was once quite pricey, if measured in today's dollars. So someday we probably will see cheap power meters. Hope I'm still able to put out enough power to measure when that happens!

I predict Pcad will be rocking some Metrigear / Garmin pedals by Thanksgiving on his Di2 Scott FO1L.

I though I saw somewhere they set up some speedplays with the sensors for proof of concept... The price is key. The availability of spindles to convert the pedels you have would be icing on the cake.

Just doing my part to feed the mill.
