Psimet. Nothing like handbuilt wheels made to your specs.

pdedes 06-16-11 03:23 PM

what benefit are you expecting?

AdelaaR 06-16-11 03:28 PM

Your fulcrums are fine.
You will not gain any speed by any other wheel unless you do TT's at a constant speed of 30mph and get more aero wheels or you do extreme hills and get lighter wheels.
The rest is marketing talk.

Sounds like what you really want is $3000 Zipps. Don't settle for anything less.

Sell your Roubaix. Get a TT bike with some aero wheels and an aero helmet.

Those zipps are only slightly better than those fulcrums yet 20 times more expensive.
The difference in speed will be 1% depending on the OP's current speed.
The biggest difference in speed can be obtained by:
1) HTFU 2) assume a more aero position ... 3 ... 4 ... 5 ... 6 ... 7) also you might look at your wheels if you still have too much money.

Karma for shooting dogs.

You will not gain 1-3 seconds by changing your wheels. Face it, you are just slower than the guy you are trying to beat. Train better and HTFU:P

and pretend you are being chased by dogs...oh wait, you probably stop to shoot them...nevermind :innocent:

Interesting!
If the OP indeed shoots dogs than this means that he isn't fast enough to outrun them.
Most dogs run about 22mph and so we can assume then OP is slower.
This leads to the conclusion that ZIPPS will not make him faster.
Ahh science :)

As others mentioned, you should take a close look at your position on the bike first and also get an aero helmet for time trials. In terms of wheels, if you are looking for a low'ish' cost aero wheelset you can get one with Kinlin XR-380 38mm deep aluminum rims. To get the cost lower you can use 27mm or 30mm deep rims. I like the HED rims too, but I don't know how their aerodynamics really compare with deeper rims.

thanks for no help

Yeah, but the guy you are trying to beat is still 1-3 seconds faster than you'll ever be. :thumb:

Personally, I'd go with the Mavics for durability given the choice of those two... but some of the custom builders could probably do a lot better for the same budget. And I would expect a noticeable difference as well. I had those same Fulcrums on my Tarmac and they felt like anchors on the short/steep climbs around here. Switching over to a relatively modest set of Easton EA70s was a night and day difference and I went from straggling at the back on the climbs to being one of the first over the top.

So you are saying you cannot even outbike a dog as little and slow as a pittbull?

Plus I could be making the dog story up just to get your goat....

canam73 06-17-11 07:33 AM

I got attacked by a dog when I was13 while doing a paper route on my bike. I kicked him and caught him right in the neck and apparently broke it because it went down and didn't get up. I wish I had zips on my schwinn back then because I could then have been able to out run the dog and not kill it.

datlas 06-17-11 12:16 PM

If your choice is between those two I would pick the Ardennes.

I was in a similar search situation a few months ago, same budget, and ended up with Williams 38C carbon clinchers.

No need to get all hostile.

Those Mavic K10s are on sale at CC for $799, in case that helps your decision.

I think of the dogs that give chase, 22mph is on the slow side. Larger dogs (retriever, shepherd types) can pretty easily break 30mph if they are healthy and not elderly. I was once being chased by a little 15 pound mutt on a rural highway and he was keeping up at 25! :)
