Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Seat Bag
Two CO2 Cartridges
Extra Innertube
Two tire levers
Cell phone
ID
Debit Card

Food in pockets and water in cages.

I need to get a multi-tool for the underseat. Probably going to grab a nashbar special the next time they go on clearance.

I've gotten 3 flats in the past 2 weeks. Two in one trip. I feel like I need to start slinging extra tubes over my neck every ride.

ID
Keys
Patch kit
CO2
Tube
Cell phone
Water bottles
Multi-tool
ACME anvil and dynamite (+1 on the roadrunners)

As for some of the more interesting things I've carried (in my hands) on my beater bike at school:

2 boxes of pizza
LCD monitor (scary 'cause I couldn't reach the brakes going downhill)
50 lbs of books
Target grocery bags containing giant bottles of laundry detergent
Bags of ice

Yes. Found out on a ride last summer when a bee got under my jersey. And I got a Road ID and put it on there too.

You just never know when an exam might be beneficial!
Really though, it's many-fold...one is for really greasy fix-its (chain, r-DR, etc.), another is for extra grip. Be it rolling tires onto the rim after your tire lever snaps, or getting a grip on tools and such. Lastly, they make good McGyver'isms. Last week one of my Garmin's rubber bands snapped. I used a glove to wrap around the stem and tie fingers into a knot and tie the Garmin securely.

I carry in a ziplock bag which goes into center jersey pocket, spare tube, patch kit, co2, multi-tool, and some money. In the left pocket, iPhone and in the right keys and snacks if I'm on a longer ride. Don't use a saddle bag, ruined a couple of bibs.
In the event that I have to operate--a.k.a chain-break.

I've had six flats in the last two weeks after having zero in the previous nine months. I've gotten really fast at changing a tube, and a better bike handler too (could have been 9-10 flats). I also had a CO2 adapter blow an O-ring so it was instantly useless.

Point being, if you're not being self-reliant, get there, and don't expect "some Fred" to bail your sorry helpless ass out.

Seatbag:
Two tubes
Three CO2 cannisters
A new CO2 attachment (with no moving parts to break!)
Some squares of old tubes to serve as a tire boot
A $20
A Multi-tool
Two tire levers
The "code" to my bike lock
The bike lock is the skinny, rubber-coated, coiled type, and the natural coil is the same diameter as my headtube, so it doesn't budge at all.
I'm looking for my mini pump around the house to hook to the elastic strap on the bottom of my seatbag. Might go for a Lezyne mounted under a bottle cage if I can't find it though.

In my rear pockets I carry a minimum of: wallet, phone, Shimano cleat covers, heart rate monitor on chest, Road ID on wrist.

Depending on the ride, I'll add stuff, and spread it around so the weight is somewhat evenly distributed, or it'll bother me when climbing out of the saddle, especially if my jersey is open. For longer rides I'll add 1-3 Cliff Bars, a 6 oz. reusable squeeze bottle gel, electrolyte chews, a spare bottle.

I'll add a 100 oz. Camelbak and transfer some of my pocket stuff to its pockets if the ride warrants it, but it has to be >80 degrees, >4,000 feet of climbing, and >50 miles with no known places to refill my bottles.

Its probably a good idea you carry your insurance card with you in case something bad happens.

If something happens that warrants the use of your insurance card...you probably don't need your insurance card at that moment.

Mine is always in my mini-wallet, if I'm on the bike or not. It might make some paperwork a little easier...

Brand new to this hobby. I currently take: spare tube, CO2, presta adapter, patch kit with levers, wallet, smartphone, and car keys all in my small saddle bag.

And I sold my .357 to buy the bike so that's missing.

Why do some of you carry a spoke wrench? Have you ever had to use it? Could you not ride home without using it?

I've never used it on my bicycle, but 3 or 4 times on some friends' wheels - a big pothole, a crash, etc. Usually opening the brake or loosening the cable is enough to ride back home, but sometimes not.
