Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Leftover LOOK 566/Rival worth it???

I am in need of a backup bike. Went to the LBS and was shown a 2009 Look 566 with Rival that the owner is willing to let go at cost just to move it. He is asking $1650 with Fulcrum 7 or 5 wheels (not sure since I will be using my Psimets on it anyway). It seems like a pretty decent deal to me, but I don't really know that much about Look's other than I like their pedals. Thanks.

Last Xmas a riding buddy picked up a 2010 566 with 105's from Real Cyclist for $1300. Don't recall the wheel set though.

I think that you're buddy is exaggerating w/ the $1300 thing. Look would not allow a current $2500 MSRP bike to be sold for almost %50 off, they have restrictions on that sort of thing so that it does not devalue their brand. That said the $1650 is a decent deal for the bike. Most LBS's would have that deal marked down to $1900 or so for a 2009 bike. I say go for it.

Actually, that very bike was going for even less at one point on Real Cyclist. The cheapest I saw the bike for with discounts, was 1,166. I believe this was between December and January I want to say. I was absolutely shocked when I saw the price and almost bought it just for the heck of it.

*price was for 105 and I think Fulcrum 7's, not Rival.

That's exactly right. I saw it myself. They had maybe 5 bikes left. In fact, I recommended that bike to my buddy's wife as a Xmas present. $1300.

Watch this Xmas again with Real Cyclist.

Wow, that's pretty shocking. I would have bought it just to part it out and swap the frame with my backup.

I think Excel has a couple Looks on their closeout sheet. They might have sold the 2009s.

That's exactly what I was planning to do...While I waffled back and forth about it, they sold out in short order...

This is what my friend has. Very nice looking bike, and he has had no problems with it at all. I think he paid $2k in September 2009, so I'm not sure if $1650 is that great of a deal.
