Wallet loaded.ready to pull the trigger...
Hello people I am now ready to do my first BIG upgrade to my bike. Its goanna be a new wheel set. After looking and touching all the wheels I have decided to roll with the Mavic's my two choices are the Ksyrium elite and the Ksyrium SL
I would like to know which one of the two would you recommend and the pro's and con's
for each.
Thanks..JT

Go for the SL's if you can afford the extra $$. I love mine. the red hubs are a nice asthetic bonus that matches the other red parts on my bike. The Elite's are still a good wheelset though.

Both are way overpriced, especially the SL. You can get used SL's for $400 on Craigslist. 2008 and up are all the same exact wheel, just different colors. Only exception is the SL Premium which has a titanium axel so it weighs 1480 instead of 1485. I still stand by my original recommendations.

Those wheels are nice and all, but what I hate about Mavic wheels is everything is proprietary. If something happens to any part of the wheel, you'll be waiting on Mavic to send you replacement parts. And this only seems like a moderate upgrade... why not wait a while until you have a little more cash and get some Eurus or something really nice? I feel like if you buy the Mavics, you'll be upgrading again later.

I have the Elites and am really pleased with the ride quality. Are the SLs worth the extra money...? That would depend on your purpose, racing, big hills or everyday rides. Good luck with the new wheels, they will make you faster and give you a reason to ride more.

I agree with avoiding the Mavics. Way too much money for proprietery wheels that aren't THAT light. I have had two sets of Stans Alpha Comps. Lighter, and half the price of the SL's if you get 'em at that right place.

I have Mavic Elites and have been very happy with them. The reasons why I went with Elites over SLs are: 1)Price. 2) Steel spokes on the elites, aluminum alloy spokes on the SLs. The alloy spokes supposedly have a harsher ride quality mainly due to the interface with the rim, and are wider, resulting in more instability in crosswinds. The bladed spokes are actually quite un-aero. The roads in my area are horrible. 3)The weight difference between SLs and Elites is only about 100 g. Neither wheel is particularly light for an aluminum clincher, and in the future, you will probably upgrade to either a more aero wheel, or a lighter wheel altogether. That said, the Elites make awesome training wheels, and are bombproof. Also, don't worry about this proprietery stuff. . .Everybody and their mom has Ksyriums. It's really not that big a deal.

That's why I ended up with Mavic K10s (same as the SL) - they've been around and have a reputation for being durable. I wasn't upgrading and just needed to replace some old wheels. I also tried to get in touch with a certain wheel builder on this forum and had no luck, and then found the K10s on sale and pulled the trigger. Finally, you might want to wait a few months and see what kind of end of the season deals are available. This is the busy season for a lot of places, with it being summer and the TdF being on and more people getting into riding.

When I was looking for a new wheelset, I was after the Ksyrium's as well. After speaking with a few members here and elsewhere, I opted for a different set at a lower price.
The Ksyriums aren't a bad wheel by any means, but what others said about replacement pieces and mainly the price....you can find another wheelset at the same weight, strength, for much cheaper.
I was going to have a set built until I came across a set of HED Bastogne's and couldn't pass them up for the price. If I had to do it all over again, I would look for a set of HED Ardonnes which are a step up from mine or have a set built. Not that I dislike mine....it's just you said you have a loaded wallet and we're trying to lighten the load for you.
If it's the Mavic's you after then I would go for the SL's only because a wheelset is a major upgrade and if you are already forking out $$$ for the Elite, take the extra step and get the better wheel.
