How often do you change bar tape ?

Once a year? Every 1000km? 5000km? When it looks skanky? Never?

Just wondering........

Post your fav tape too if you've got one.

gw280 07-18-11 10:46 PM

After a crash or when it starts to look worn :)

I change it when I feel like it.

Black tape gets changed every 1 to 3 years. White tape, every 1 to 3 months.

Nachoman 07-18-11 11:10 PM

Once a year, whether it needs it or not. Just for the change.

Thanks guys. Currently looking my white SRAM tape which is getting pretty damn dirty, but not otherwise worn apart from the odd scuff. Its about a year and many '000s km old. To change or not?

DRietz 07-19-11 12:03 AM

White tape is just bad news...

It's pro, but pros also put new tape on daily.

Give it a good going over with dishwash.

I pretty much replace when worn. I'm using the Stella Azzura Eleganza. Best tape I've used so far. Its got a tacky feeling without being sticky or gummy.

I wash mine when I give my bike a good scrub-a-dub. Windex works wonders.

I also put on fresh tape before an "A" race because everyone knows bikes with new bar tape are faster.

javal 07-19-11 01:33 AM

Since I ride different bikes, bar tape doesnt get worn that fast. My Bontrager tape is sensational!

Agave 07-19-11 06:49 AM

I unwrap the bars and put the tape in the washing machine with my bibs.

Every day, every ride.

Body filth on bar tape can cause canker sores and gout.

I guess saddle sores are a myth then? If you haven't had them then they must not exist.

You should change your sig unless you are trying to be ironic.

Seriously.

I don't mind a little dirt and windex or Oxyclean helps on white tape. Scuffs on the otherhand, the tape just has to go..

Seriously.

Now did I ever say that sweetheart?

I think not.

Run along now.

Yes, dear.

Of course you're right dear.

No, no, you never said that.

You never said that despite how often you ride in unwashed bibs you continually fail to develop saddle sores.

Nope. Not you.

I know.

Yes, I know.

I'm a bad man.

When it starts to wear. Mine will be replaced soon. It's been about ten months, and lots of riding in the rain.

Cork tape is great!

tagaproject6 07-19-11 10:15 AM

My favorite tapes would be Deda, Cinelli, Fizik and any other brand that is on sale and I happen to like. But those are my top 3. Currently on Fizik with a stash of others.

I shellac mine so if it gets dinged and scratched I just put on a fresh coat, or touch it up. but I drill holes in the shellac to reduce weight.

I bought a roll of that stuff, along with several other brands, on a PBK close-out last year. It really is nice! Now I'm sorry I didn't buy more at $5/roll.

Also, I'm sorry I put it on my son's bike.

2Flats 07-19-11 04:47 PM

still on my first roll of bar tape(white) and its lookin real black, probably buy new tape in a few months - fizik or cork

pallen 07-19-11 06:44 PM

I change mine every time I change underwear - at least once a month if they need it or not.

Steve90068 07-19-11 06:47 PM
