Pcad - I guess you're right, it could easily be Road Nazi bullshirt too.

Banerjek - You are right that a competent rider on a TT rig could be safer to ride with than an idiot on a racing bike. I haven't been to the local hammerfest since 5/31/11 because of squirrels. (Mind you, I'm not entirely innocent here...I've been the squirrel my fair share too.)

rpeterson - You seem to have a good head on your shoulders.

These are impressive results. And I like the fact that you are getting proper equipement. Happy riding.

So you knew there was an unwritten rule to stay out of aero on the group ride, you decided to ignore that rule and they came back and said "you will have to ride a bike where you cant do that."

Is that about it?

There's always one of these in threads like this

You who talk about different disciplines, this is not like fencing with a broadsword, it is riding a friggin' bike. All the LBS group rides around here do not discriminate on the bike, only on the level of rider.

That's all it should be. You all make it sound like a club based on handlebar shape.

At least we know why they're booting you out. As many have correctly surmised, the equipment wasn't the real issue -- it's that you're a Fred...

i was about to say the same thing...

I'm a triathlete, it means I have the arm strength to raise my fingers off the bars whenever I please. ;)

rangerdavid 07-25-11 04:17 PM

you could just lower yourself to their level and say "i'm not riding with you guys, i'm drafting you all the way".... they have no right to say when and where you can ride, so just draft 'em the whole way. Eff 'em, that'll piss em off.

Mike F 07-25-11 04:22 PM

Id rather ride with a "Fred" than a "Dick".

We've all seen the pictures. It's a foregone conclusion there is no danger of anyone NOT getting a draft off of you regardless of your position.

Eh, I'm over it, I was kinda pissed this morning though. I learned a lot riding with these guys, I had the noob problem of upping the pace when I pulled, after a few yells I got that under control, and I learned the little things like how to check my back wheel for space before moving to avoid stuff. Plus I did my first sub 4 century with them, so good memories. I don't plan on going back once my road bike gets in, but I'll keep doing my morning rides and wave to the guys when I pass them.

:scratches head: I don't understand. What aren't you telling us? Something must have happened.

I was going to fix that for you, but I'll let someone else.

OP, do they let you back in with your new Cervelo/Felt/whatever road bike? Did you buy it just to ride in that group, or were you just putting of getting one eventually? I don't get it.

Ditto.

Seems like a bunch of uptight guys.

Somehow, hoping to be "Dickless" just doesn't sound right

I've been looking at road bikes since before the 2 guys started hassling me and I ordered it last week before they asked me to stop coming. I've done a few crits and road races on borrowed bikes and with a recent work bonus I broke down and got myself one. I probably won't join back up with them though.

KiddSisko 07-25-11 04:39 PM

OP, whatever road bike you do get, just make sure it's fitted with a SRAM group. That way you'll be sure to get the respect you deserve.

I suspected he got banned for wearing tri-gear. They didn't want to draft behind some guy in a speedo and spandex wife beater.

CHAS 07-25-11 04:44 PM

Were you wearing that speedo again?

runningDoc 07-25-11 04:47 PM

when you get your new road bike do this:

join up for a group ride with aforementioned group. ride along like business as usual. then break out the clip on aero bars that you've hidden under your bibs. bolt on the aerobars like a stealthy ninja when you're at the back. After bolting on the aerobars... break out the time trial helmet also hidden under your bibs...

hammer out from the back into the lead... and keep on hammering until you reach the changing station you set up the night before. clip out strip down, throw on your newton running shoes and running attire and finish your impromptu biathalon (or tri if you decide to swim before the group ride meet up).

seriously - find some tri guys and try out a group ride with the tri-geeks. compare the experience after a couple of months and decide if you want to go back to group rides with regular rode bike dudes.

Yes...did the OP do anything "questionable" while the group was drafting?

I did show up in a speedo and leg warmers once because I was heading to a race straight after, it was like 40 degrees, and man it sucked.

That sucks that 2 bad apples are going to spoil the whole bunch for you, but if it's that easy to leave they must not be great apples. Red delicious my sore ash.

I see their point, but I'm not going to accuse you of not communicating that you would be getting a road bike soon, and if you were riding safely for months whilst they allowed you to makes it outrageous. If they were just the least bit hostile I wouldn't be waving to those guys anymore.

Enjoy your new bike and group.
