Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

PVC Rollers

I have a line on a used set of Cycleops PVC rollers that I can pick up for $50. Is it worth it to get a sense if I am going to like the rollers or am I just wasting my money.

well what ever you do for rollers, or any stationary riding unit, your looking for a smooth bering system and a heavy roller. You want "road feel" which is the ability to let up on the pedals and have the bike "coast" for a bit. Once that works you can crank down resistance wherever you want and you'll still have "road feel". If they weigh a bunch go for it. If they don't and you feel handy and think you can fill them with concrete from Home depot, then go for it.

I have a set of Cycleops PVC rollers and are quite happy with them. (as long as I can stay up) They are pretty quiet and roll just fine. Although, this is the only pair I have ever had.
Price seems pretty good if they are in decent shape.

If you can find a set of Kreitlers anywhere, compare the two. Then make up your mind for yourself. I say that to preceed what I think. Granted, it is only my opinion, but I feel cheaper rollers aren't worth the money. YMMV. That's why I would like for you to compare for yourself, if possible.

I say buy them and test it out. You'll find if you want to keep rolling or not. Aluminum is definitely a better choice, but you'll never find any Al rollers for $50. Buy them, test them out, and sell them on eBay when you're done with them. As a matter of fact, you could probably just buy them and sell them on eBay right now and make a few bucks.

Try the Kreitler rollers first. I have the 2 1/4 diameter rollers and absolutely love them. They are extremely well made and provide an outstanding work out.

If you don't have any experience with rollers buy the $50 ones and use them until they quit. Don't spend $$$$$ on a nice set and decide rollers are not for you. Many riders who have tried them do not like riding rollers.

What if he trys them and gets turned off of rollers forever? I only tried the ones I found in a neighbor's trash pile. They are metal, and I like them. If you try the plastic ones and you hate them, remember that metal ones are better and you might not hate them. My un-educated guess is you will enjoy the plactic ones.

PVC rollers are easily warped if exposed to sunlight. If you're really attached to them, then ride them first to see if they are smoooth. Brand new aluminum rollers can be found for under $200.
