Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Suggestions for rides near Redondo Beach?

I will be visiting friends in Redondo Beach over Thanksgiving.
I am thinking of bringing my road bike with me. Any suggestions
for routes in the general area? Not too long, maybe 25-30 miles?
Am I right in assuming that the bike path along the beach is crowded
and not much fun? Thanks!

Yes, you are correct in assuming that. But, it's far less crowded on weekdays during the late fall than on a weekend in the summer. It's a terrific place to ride early in the morning as well. Take it up to Santa Monica and back at least once - it's well worth doing.

Just south of Redondo Beach is Palos Verdes. I've attached a Topo Profile of a nice hilly route. I can send the exact Topo route if you'd like.

I still remember being on the path along the beach- it is really bad. It's worse on weekends and later afternoons. But early morning would be coolest... there weren't many people out and about except the occasional jogger here and there. But if you leave out early and head north first to Malibu, then turn around and head south, and go all the way past Redondo beach, you can probably get that kind of mileage in.

If you can stomach the traffic, I think PCH is awesome!

The less time you spend on the "bike" path, the better. Cyclefreaks suggestion about Palos Verdes is spot on. Not a lot of stop lights/signs, beautiful scenery, descent hills, etc. Give it a shot, you won't be dissapointed
