Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ditto, ditto. We decided not to try to get pregnant, but we agreed to stop trying to avoid pregnancy. Conception happened the next cycle.

Oh, and OP - if you think that you're cutting back on the cycling now, just wait for the first few months of parenthood!

Both my kids came while I was still riding 300 miles weeks. Like other have stated, just let it happen. With the first kid I though I was a stud horse, we did it at the drop of the hat and nothing happen. When we stop trying, it happened.

There's no medical evidence that tight pants or warm weather exercise causes male sterility. Go ahead and google it. The most common phrase you'll see in the results is:
That is actually a myth. There is very good evidence that shows that tight jeans and tight underwear, as well as all types of clothing do not have any effect on sperm count. There is really no difference in boxers versus briefs, tight jeans versus loose pants.

Having children is hereditary, if your parents didn’t have kids chances are good you won’t either.

Good luck to you! I know what it's like to be in your situation. Beware advice based on anecdotal evidence, since every case is unique. Nonetheless, I can't resist recommending this book.

Why not just use normal non constrictive underwear instead of giving up cycling?

In general I don't have any problems with generalizations ... but that is just silly.

tardo, were you tested? if you sperm is not low then why stop? If it is it is another issue..Most likely it is a fertility issue onher part. See a in vitro guy...I speak from experience.

Do not be alarmed and definately not stressed.
Get a second opinion at least ... doctors do not know everything and it may well be that your spermcount and spermhealth is just perfect ... it would be a pitty to give up cycling if it doesn't pose a problem, which I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

With the amount of mileage your doing i highly doubt your cycling is preventing you and your wife from having a child. I'd get a second opinion.

It took us 2.5 years, and it was fun trying.

Same story here. After months of consulting with doctors, marking dates on calendars, and even considering medical intervention, we just kind of took a break. It was during this break when my wife took a week off work to get her wisdom teeth removed. Still somewhat hopped up on pain pills and feeling good from the attention I was giving her (I was also on a break from work), we did it and that did it! My wife is an eager professional, so she is in high stress as it is, and stressing out over trying to get pregnant didn't help at all.

Sounds believable to me. 3 weeks leading up to the birth and 6 weeks after, one or both of them were in the hospital. The constant visits and other new parent duties kept me off the bike for a while, and I was depressed and moody. I also continued to gain weight and am still trying to work it off a year later.

Don't get too excited. You will be so busy changing diapers and giving the little one attention, and so tired from waking up every 3 hours from his cries (that's how often newborns feed), and so frazzled from the other times he screams and you can't figure out why, you might not be able to ride that new Roubaix for a while. I cracked my frame shortly before having my son and the replacement bike had maybe 200 miles on it when he turned 3 months old. So I recommend waiting a year before buying the Roubaix so you don't sit there looking at a "like new" 1 year-old bike.
While as team urologist i DO NOT believe cycling is your problem, the statement above is blatantly false. Any sort of temperature increase of the scrotum and testes that wipes out your count, such as a significant febrile illness, takes 73 days to replenish your count, the life cycle of a "swimmer" from beginning to maturation. Get a sperm count and if it's not normal see a urologist, don't just accept that biking is the problem. Highly unlikely your testicles reach a significant temp increase what with sweat, evaporative cooling, etc.

The roubaix is a fine bike...is there anything in the deal about it being S-Works or not? Because if its not perfectly clear in the details....

Wake her up from a dead sleep. Worked twice. Reason. Everyone was relaxed and not expecting anything.
Worked for us and after my wife gave the advice to her friends it worked for them.

Why a Roubaix and oh yeah get as many miles as you can cause those first few weeks are exercises in sleep deprivation. Even if you guys breast feed there are still diapers. Which, oddly, becomes the man's jurisdiction cause mom has to feed the baby. Every two hours. Enjoy the no sleep thing. Actually you end up sleeping when the baby does. So you sleep in the middle of the day. Best memories are curling up on the couch and catching some zzzs with the little ones laid squarely on my chest.

Good times.

This makes no sense - end this thread. There's no relationship between cycling and sperm.
Nerve damage I believe, but that's a different proiblem.
Get back on your bike and go have a kid. Or not - it's your life.

If you can afford the roubiax, go get it regardless. If you can't afford it, don't get it under any circumstances. There's no relationship between bikes and kids. Your calculus is just a mind game.

As has been said - I wouldn't stop giving stuff up, changing diets, etc. until you figure out what the problem is a little more specifically. It could be her - could be you.

My wife and I have always been able to conceive the first month we started trying - every time. We've been blessed.
