Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

10 hours per week +/-.5 I never realized how consistent it was until you asked. Ten commutes plus 3-4 hours on weekends, rarely missing.

2 - 4 hours per week...or I should say per weekend, as I'm pretty much limited to Saturday mornings.

Meh. People ride for all kinds of reasons - getting a workout is just one of them. I mean, I'm a devotee to the church of the big chain ring, but I'd also rather be tootling along on the MUP than watching TV.

Anyway, in starting the thread, I wanted to know how much time people spend on their bikes, however they see fit. To be honest, I really wanted people to say how much of their days they devote to our hobby, to include time they spent on rides, but not riding, like if you go out for a few hours, but spend twenty minutes stopped for pictures.

You can sit on your bike for hours on end, and barely get a workout. I stopped doing the local weekend 4 hr group ride since between the stops, regroups, no-drops, average speed became close to 11mph. I can almost RUN that fast. (Ok, not for 4 hours, though.)
Recovery is training, too.

Wow, most of you folks are racking up the hours/miles. I just started riding (after a 25 yr. layoff) and I am getting 3 to 7 hrs a week. The lower number earlier and the larger number in recent weeks. Doing my first 75 mile ride this coming thursday.

So far this year: 5559.82 mi, 345:54:54. That averages to 21.57mi per day, 1:20:32 for time.

Last year totals: 6380 mo, 414:12:05

I expect to blow away last years numbers, but last year I had an operation and associated recovery time.

My usual ride takes 3:30 hours, I try to make it at least 3 times a week. At the beginning of the season it took well over 4 hours.

Then you should have asked that question in the first place.

For the most part, my totals would include total time for the rides. I don't count ride time. For me, when I roll out of the driveway, or away from the van, or whatever ... that's when my ride starts. When I wrap my ride up for the day, that's when it ends. And if I happen to notice how much time has passed between the start and finish, that's the time for my ride. And, of course, that time will include riding, stopping for lunch, stopping for photos, etc. etc.

That's not bad for early spring and late autumn (building up and easing off).

For most of the year (except maybe a few weeks in the middle of winter) I try to aim for a minimum of 10.5 hours of exercise a week.

A number of years ago, a study was released that suggested that people need to exercise at least 60 minutes per day, 7 days a week in order to maintain a decent level of fitness, and a minimum of 90 minutes per day, 7 days a week in order to gain fitness and/or lose weight. As expected, there was an outcry among the sedentary who said that was way too much exercise and they couldn't possibly be expected to do that. Unexpectedly (to me) there has been an outcry among cyclists ... who presumably exercise a lot ... just about every time I've mentioned this study, telling me that they couldn't possibly be expected to exercise that much.

The thing was, the study did not suggest 90 minutes of continuous exercise every day, it suggested adopting an active lifestyle where a person might walk to work (30 min), walk at lunch (30 min), go for a ride after work (30 min), or go to the gym in the morning (30 min), walk on breaks (15 min x 2), go swimming in the evening (30 min), etc. etc. Plus, of course, all the usual suggestions like taking the stairs, parking at the far end of the shopping centre parking lot, going to the park with the kids and throwing a ball around, etc.

I multiplied 90 minutes * 7 days and divided by 60 = 10.5 hours ... and so I aim to exercise 10.5 hours per week. And for me, that includes about 15-18 km/week of walking (3 hours, 20 minutes), which leaves me with a little over 7 hours to make up with cycling. Most of the time, I make that up and then some.

I'm riding about 8 hours a week using the TCTP. Usually 1.5 on Tue/Thur, then 2hr/3hr on Sat/Sun. Good results thus far.
