Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Awesome, that's what I was thinking. Wallet is crying a bit, but I'm determined to get on the bike this winter.

For waterproofness, kind of, put on, in order:

Socks
Shoes
Plastic bag (like supermarket bag)
Booties

Yes the bag covers your cleats. Should be okay for most cleat systems (Look, Time, I dunno about Speedplay).

Your feet will be dry for about an hour. They'll eventually get soaked in condensation but in an hour crit they'll be fine (or an hour training ride). The plastic is definitely windproof so that helps with keeping your feet warm.

Cannondale made an outer sock (baggy but water- and wind-proof) that kind of worked like the plastic bag but I didn't know it'd work outside the shoe. I always put it inside the shoe.

Bikes: quite a few

I was considering trying the plastic bag setup myself, but what's the point of the booties over the plastic bag? Just curious.
