Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ever High-Five?

Sometimes when either me or another cyclist coming the other way is on a fast descent, I get the urge to high five. Is that just a good way to cause a wreck, or is it NBD, or like totally rad?

Two riders swerving unexpectedly toward the center of the road, and slapping hands at a high rate of speed. What could possibly go wrong there?

Oooh yeah, NYC is fertile for high-fives:

LMAO:

Strictly speaking, striking another person uninvited is assault. Making that stick in court would be pretty hard, but still. People are minding their own business, trying to snag a cab, and this guy comes along and hits them. What if he struck a person suffering from rheumatoid arthritis? The pain would be terrible, and he'd be blithely on his way, assaulting more people.

He's an artsy-fartsy type who evidently thinks his artistic vision is important enough to go out and interrupt other people's days, even if it is only for a moment. Some are amused, some nonplussed, some frightened, some annoyed. Is the amusement of some worth the startlement of others? I don't think so. That, and artsy-fartsy types just bug me. Get a job, pansy. A REAL job.

One umbrella through the spokes makes up for lots of random minor assaults. New Yorkers as a rule put up with a lot of ****, but beyond the tipping point retribution is harsh and swift. Remember that when you're spread-eagled on the ground with your teeth artistically arrayed around your face.

Exactly... Nothing COULD go wrong, I assume everything possible WILL go wrong.

when in France, I high five'd a batch of kids by the side of the road. I think my record was 4 in a row. I never thought it was a great idea doing a high five at 25mph, but I hate to disappoint.

You tough guy.
Me scared.

OP - forget high-fives or silly waves. Do what I do - every roadie you encounter, get off the bike and give them 3 Euro-style kisses, alternating cheeks.

Eewww. I think that's what the OP in the wave/no wave threads is looking for.

On a side note, when my nephew was only 2 or 3 years old, he gave me a kiss on each cheek just before he was leaving. I said, "Oh Max, you're so European." Without hesitating, he promptly responded, "European in the bath tub!"

An interesting video; however you really need to put a "not workplace appropriate" warning on posts like this.

I think it sounds like a fantastic idea, get a helmet cam and show us how it's done and remember the faster you are going the better woohooo!

I think the next logical step is a thread on shoulder punching as you pass another cyclist, then after that step it up to cycle jousting

Hmm, but wasting time online while at work is workplace appropriate?
