It's a good deal, but not a great "deal of the century" deal. Also, $1000 is quite a bit of money to put down on a first bike. If he has only been riding your bike occasionally, there is no telling if he is really going to get fully into riding when he gets his own bike. A $400-500 sora/tiagra bike would probably be a better starter bike for someone just getting their feet wet. (Just my opinion though)

FWIW, he rides his Fisher Superfly 29'er 300mi/month on the road. I think he just wants a more efficient ride.

That make it a whole different situation. New question, Why doesn't he own a road bike? Does he at least have a second wheel set for his superfly? That might actually be all he needs. If I am correct, the Superflys are carbon and actually pretty light for a MTB. He could probably get some thin 700's with disc mounts and some 25-28 slick tires and be doing just as good as a new bike at a quarter of the cost.

IDK why he doesn't have a road bike. He got the Fisher to race and has only raced it once, I think regretting the purchase but it was a full SLX Superfly 29'er, brand new for $1200... couldn't have passed it up without someone slapping him in the nose.

Probably just a cheap ass. His girlfriend offered to help out on the cost of one and tried to justify it by saying "it's 30 miles to my house you could get here faster if you had a road bike" but he wouldn't budge. Wanted to spend $200 but wants a BMC. I was like uhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Oh, and to answer your original question: I thought it was too good a deal to pass up. Admittedly the bike was a bit overpriced at MSRP for aluminum, but $1000 for that bike with that groupset seems more than a little hot.

And if I don't like the wheels, I happen to have a set of Open Pro/Ultegras with about 300 miles that I can throw on it.

Well, I hope he's either really short or really tall because all the average size frames are gone...

How does this compare with a Felt?
 

I've been hooked on getting a Felt Z85 with 105 components (FSA crank). I have found one for $1050. How does this bike compare to the Felt (or vice versa)? Am I getting more bike for my money with the BMC, or just getting different decals?

The F in Felt stands for FSA crank.

I wouldn't spend more money to get a piece of **** FSA crank.

You're entitled to your opinion, but FSA makes some cheap cranks that are as good or better than other brands' cheap cranks, and they make good cranks that are cheaper than other brands' good cranks.
