Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Planet x wheels

Does anyone on here have any experience with planet x wheels? they seem to be a cheaper option for carbon wheels, especially there

https://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/...50-82-wheelset

also a picture of these wheels on your bike would be nice, thanks for any input

I have a set of their aluminium lightweight "Model B" wheels. Am very happy with them; they've done several thousand miles and have never been trued, even though I've gone over some BIG potholes.

As for the company, I'm currently a little miffed at them because they messed up an order that cost me nearly $100 which I'll never get back. Your mileage may vary though..

thats good to hear they have a bit of longetivity, but what is puttin me off slightly, is 1) the internal nipples in their carbon wheels, and 2) the fact that when they lace a wheel up with an out of house hub, such a dt swiss, they cost not far off double of what a wheel with their own brand hub laced into it, has anyone any experience with their 'planet-x superlight hub'?

Yeah, the Model Bs use the Planet X superlight; I've never had any trouble with it.

The rims are Gigantex rims, not the lightest out there, but they're very strong. Several of the smaller builders use the same rims.

Not sure if the OP is in the UK, but PX stuff is really common here. Generally regarded to be decent stuff for the money, just not terribly cutting edge or exotic. Their rims are going to be the same (Gigantex?) as those used by innumerable other companies that don't manufacture their own stuff, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Bikes: Yeah, I got a few.

If you're in the US, there's Boyd, November, and countless others to have a look at too.

i just got them a couple of weeks ago to use as race wheels. i've done one test ride on them and they felt pretty awesome compared to my current wheels, which are mavic ksyrium elites. to address one of your points, they are NOT internal nipples; i think they used to be, but at least on this model they've changed that.

FYI, these are planet x R50 tubular team edition wheels. they're 50mm deep and the claimed weight is 1296g. i've never weighed them but they feel really light.

as i said, though, i've only done one ride on them. i can give you more feedback in the spring once i start racing on them...

Man, I really don't like their new logo. Old one was much better.

i know, i might take them off and go stealthy or stick on some sram decals, they were always my favourites. I looked into gigantex, and they seem good, my only problem, how do i go about ordering a set off them?

just so you know, you can't take the decals off. i think i read somewhere that they're actually laser-etched, but not sure about that. either way they're definitely under the clear coat.

Probably more like clear coated over. Which they can be sanded off...I've done it with Stradalli carbon wheels. I got a thread on what I did on the mechanic section. Took me like 4hrs of sanding and a big PITA. Then clear coated and wet sanded.

They look sweet stealth now. Never do that again though. Buy wheels with just decals you can remove easily on top of the clear coat I would recommend.
