Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When is your shifter toast???

When will you know your shifter is $%^&'d ? I have 10 year old sora shifters on my commuter bike and the right shifter has alot of play in it. It still up shifts but it feels loose thru the shifting arc. Does that mean some gears inside have worn out beyond repair? I know little about sti mechanics but do they reach a point where they wont hold the cable in place and the derailleur spring over powers the shifter?

When is the last time you replaced the cable?

hmm, thats a good question? im pretty good about changing obviously worn cables but maybe its what i dont see?? would a worn cable flow to freely inside the housing? i never thought about that.

cables are usually the other way around... they typically get stuck due to buildup etc... I would look at replacing the shifters... then again... why not upgrade the set... a good time to do it is now.

You can get new 5700 10-speed shifters from Ribble or Chain Reaction Cycles for about $200-$210.

so the service guy at the bike shop near me blasted the inside of the shifter with something called dri-slide. its a graphite based lubricant that goes on wet, kind of like boe-shield. seems to be working pretty well.
