A winter wool sock?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well I'll just add that the sock setup I mentioned above have served me well this year already on 30 - 40 mile rides with temps in the single digits, farenheit.

ah, I gotcha. sorry, it hasn't gotten any colder lately. Nice winter so far. I can predict though that my setup will be fine into the low 20s, the limit of my winter riding.

the point I'm trying to make, is it's really nice to have the extra room for circulation.

I started with Smartwool and Defeet woolie boolies. Defeet blaze are too thick for me. They all work. However, once I discovered the Swiftwick Pursuits, I'll never look back. They have a 4, 7 and 12 inch cuff available. The 12 is also a compression sock. I have 8 pairs of them and I'm wearing a pair of the 4's at work right now.

I also wear wool socks year round.

Are these the same as what they previously called "Merino"? The Merino One is(was?) my favorite all-around sock - great year-round weight and nothing else that I've found is as comfy. The only drawback is that, unless you buy 7 pairs, you'll wear them so often that you'll burn through them in a year.

Yes. The Pursuits are the merino offering. I never knew them as anything else. I am counting on getting a couple more pairs for X-mas. Even if I have to buy them for myself.

If it's really cold, I just grab a pair of wool hiking socks. Otherwise, the DeFeet wooleator's are good enough. It's usually the wind chill that gets me. Even at 30-40 degrees, at 18 mph, or 40 downhills, its damn cold. With shoe covers, my feet are usually the last thing that gets cold.

Or do what I do and stay riding in your thin wool socks and add Belgian booties if its chilly. Go to toe booties from 40-50. Colder'n 40? Start on the heavy weight covers.
I wear regular wool socks in these temps. Looking for something for below 30. Booties are an option, but a good sock will do me pretty well.

This sounds similar to what I'm looking for. Got a link or model name?

My local REI has these and they are pretty much what I was looking for but wanted something taller. Might get a pair anyway and give 'em a try.

I have Giordana, Capo Euro 200, and De Marchi Contour Plus wool socks. They are all of superb quality and get the job done nicely. I think my favorites are the De Marchi socks because I like the styling. I also have Contour Light socks for the summer and the standard Contour socks for the fall. Obviously I'm a fan of their socks.

The wooleaters I mentioned do have a similar weight as a "normal" cycling sock, although I'd say it is more densely woven. That is, the wooleater is about as thick as a typical cycling sock, but perhaps a bit warmer.

Reading through the other replies, it seems that if you're looking for something substantially warmer than a generic sock, but don't want to compromise the fit of your shoe, the Blaze may be the way to go.

Bikes: Yes

The Blaze is pretty thick, and you need to pull it on tightly or it will bunch up underneath your foot. Don't crank the closure down or you'll defeat (haha) the purpose.

are the best winter socks I have tried yet. So far from 24 degrees up they have been solid.

Sock Guy wool socks comfortable, good fit. lots of funky styles, including plain black for fashion-challenged.

Hincapie "Pro" wool socks These fit me really well, feel very nice.

And of course, the Defeet line of wool socks. The Classico has a denser weave than the Blaze, fits my foot better. I do have the Blaze socks for when it is really cold but they are bulkier.
