Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I do have long legs. And since I don't ride that often that's why I'd rather try out the stems than get a fitting. Problem now is where can I get stems for cheap?

@Commodus I can take my hands off the hoods by leaning most of my body backwards. The leaning towards the bars put a lot of strain on my hands and arms that's why there's a stinging sensation after awhile and I'm figuring out how to prevent this problem. The bars seem so far away when I'm on my saddle.

PBK, CRC, your local bike shop that might have a ton of cheap stems.

I think you're quite right that you need a shorter reach, but just to be thorough try and adjust your saddle's position so that you can lean forward to where you think your drops should be, without your hands on the bars without undue stress or imbalance. You should be able to pedal normally in this position. Do it on a trainer if possible, though with care you can do this while moving.

This will ensure that you are properly balanced on the bike in relation to the bottom bracket. Once this is the case, you can just lean over and it will be clear to you where you want your bars to be. If you are too far forward, in front of the BB, you will get a similar sensation of weight on your hands because your legs and seat are not supporting enough of your weight. Properly positioned, your legs and feet will actually support much of your body's weight, preventing numbness in the hands and seat. Saddle selection will also be a lot less important.

sort by price. I saw 7 options for under $12. You'll have to see if any are the length you want/right clamp diameter though.
