9 speed chainrings on SRAM red crank

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

9 speed chainrings on SRAM red crank

Looking to upgrade my tiagra group to SRAM red and the crank is the first purchase. Can I use this crank before the full upgrade by swapping chainrings or do I have to wait? (I realize this will be odd...)

any 10 speed crank will work fine with your tiara. No need to swap the chainrings. A 9 speed crank would have teeth that were too wide for a narrower 10 speed chain, but having narrower 10 speed teeth won't be be problem for the wider 9 speed chain.

No need to switch the chainrings, the SRAM ones will work fine.

I suggest using a 10 speed chain, with the standard Red chainrings

you might not be able to use a 10 speed chain on your 9 speed cassette. The teeth may be too fat and could get stuck in the narrower horizontal gap in the chain.
