Please Help Newbie ? For wheels set
Hi everyone, I have an Orbea Orca. the bike came with Fulcrum 7's wheels. I would like to upgrade. There or so many choices out there. Im new to the biking, only two years. I hear of people talking of tubeless and so on. I want something light and reliable. something easy to maintain and that can handle NY Citi streets and so on, and yes something that looks good as well.
I like the carbon look. I see brands like Zipp's Reynolds and so on. I quest my biggest concern would be catching a flat. I see where having a tube you just put a new one in and just keep rolling.
The bike weights right now 17.09 Lbs. weight is not a big issue for me, but i would like my first upgrade to reduce a little of that weight.
Thanks guys for the help and advice

I would stay away from carbon rims on NYC streets. Tubeless tires with sealant is worth considering to reduce flats. It also depends on the rims, but I would look into wheels with at least 24f/28r spokes for a 173lb rider on rough roads. If you go with Stan's Alpha 340 rims which are nice for tubeless or tubed tires, I would consider 32 spokes per wheel or 28f/32r spokes.
Another option for a reliable put it on and forget about it wheelset is with Velocity A23 rims and Shimano Ultegra or 105 hubs, although those will weigh about the same as your current wheels. I have heard that A23 rims also work well for tubeless use although I have never tried them with tubeless tires.

I have a pair of Reynolds Assault Carbon clinchers circa 2009. I am 240 lb and got the Assault because they don't have a rider weight limit. I try to use them only for special events and races, but they are so comfortable and fast I sometimes keep them on (like now).
I agree that the NYC streets aren't well-suited for carbon wheels, especially for everyday use and training. These wheels are strong enough for me at my weight that they should hold up for you at your weight. Plus, they are only about half your budget. There are some folks that think carbon wheels are more susceptible to pinch flats since they deflect less than aluminum rims. I am not sure there is merit to that claim, though.
I can also speak for Mavic Kryium SL's. I have the SSC SL and they are bullet-proof. The weight is about 200 gm less than your Fulcrum 7, so you should notice some improvements. Again, they are less than half your budget but maybe not enough an improvement to fool with.
Sorry, I don't have any experience with the road tubeless systems but they might work well for you.

The guy's name is Greg and very friendly. I don't think he has Shimano compatible Superlites listed, but I know he has them. Shoot him a PM and ask. Tell him the guy from Escondido who just bought a set from him refered you.

Mavic Ksyrium's are pretty bulletproof and I would recommend them for street riding. I also ride Reynolds Assaults and Attack wheelsets (on an Orbea Orca) for everyday riding. They are pretty solid but although LA is full of potholes, not sure if I can compare with NYC. The Vuelta's look like a good value...
