Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Time/Speedplay shoes

What shoes are time/speedplay drilled? I'm having an impossible time finding any. I know I can use an adaptor with almost any set of shoes, but I'm trying to avoid that.

Speedplay road pedals fit either 3-hole (Look) or 4-hole (Time) mounting patterns. The cleats come with the proper shims and mounting plates for either pattern.

They don't fit three hole systems, they come with their own adaptor plate, which I'd rather not have to use. I'm going to end up using speedplay pedals reguardless because of the float, but if I can I'd like to lower the stack height, get an extra part out of the system and save a little weight.

Here's a thread

Google the Carnac Silex. Can get those cheap now.

The cleats themselves have their own special 4-bolt pattern but that mounts into the proper shim. Speedplay provides shims to fit both 3-hole and 4-hole mounting patterns. The cleat is quite large and if you try to fit it directly to the shoe without the shim, you will end up without a secure contact due to the shape of the sole of the shoe. In short, for most shoes, you will need to use the shim. Direct mounting of the cleat may be possible with some shoes however. I would consult the Speedplay shoe compatibility guide.

To clear up terms speedplay pedals come with 1) a shim 2) a baseplate
The baseplate essentially changes a three hole shoe to a four hole shoe, at the cost of a few mm and grams. The shim adjusts curvature of the shoe so the cleat has a flat area to attach to.

One has to use the shim in almost all cases, but if one has a four hole shoe already there is no need to use the baseplate.

Correct. If you have a shoe with a large enough flat-bottom cleat mounting area and has a 4-bolt pattern then you can do without both the baseplate and the shims. For all 3-hole shoes, you must use the baseplate since the cleats themselves are 4-hole.

If one have 4 hole shoe, there is no need of baseplate or shim.
Problem is, there’s not many good 4 hole shoes left on the marked except
for custom ones. (Read expensive).
Might be able to get the adidas Frosco and as I wrote earlier,
the Carnac Silex is on sale all over U.S. now.
But, even they wont give you a better stack height or weight than a good 3 hole shoe.
