Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can go into a shop, copy a serial number and stick it on the bottom of a frame.

I also have no idea how good Cervolo is at tracking their frames (as in factory>dist>retailer>consumer).

Like I said, there is no way that frame would leave the factory in that condition. I may be wrong in guessing what has happened but something smells like poop.

Unfortunately it's not like the shop would ever admit to it even if it were a fake. The other problem is that since Cervelo ignored the guy too they didn't bother to do any of the work to root out a fake either. The video is still awful but I do feel bad for the guy.

I would take the frame in next time their rep is at the shop. My LBS has a brand new S5 frame and it looks flawless, this one looks like it was crashed and then fixed. Also, I don't think one bad frame is reason to write off an entire company, just my $.02

Maybe he should send the video (I mean only the pictures) to Cervelo CS? But given the crappy support he had received from them, I don't think that could help.

Agreed. For the amount of money he spent on this frame, it should be 99% flawless. Hell, as people have said before, even knockoff frames have better quality than this.

Me, too. I don't like to see people get screwed.

We don't know how the communication went between the customer and Cervelo so it's hard to assign blame there but the shop had the frame in their hands. They should be stepping up and I wonder why they seem to be throwing their hands in the air.

I dont think that is what he is trying to say at all. The build of that bike looks like crap and I would have the same frustration after paying $3K for a frame.

+1
Going direct to the manufacturer is for when either the shop isn't around anymore or when the warranty offers you extra consumer protection.
This smells real baaad.

From the guy's own comments on youtube:

"Well I guess that is easy to say but I bought it from a shop not seeing it and it was mailed to me..."

Sounds like the shop already had it in stock and then mailed it to him. IF that's the case, how could they not have noticed beforehand? Especially considering that, according to the guy, the shop that sold it to him thinks it "looks like ****".

Sounds like he got poor service from the shop before the bike was sent to him and now he's getting it just as bad from Cervelo.

Also, Cervelo's "fastest bike in the world" mantra has gone straight to their heads. I'm sure the S5s in their wind tunnel (that is the end all, be all for them) were built a lot better than the one sold to this guy.

Warrant support is such an important aspect to a new bike purchase...as in an LBSs willingness to stands by you during the process.

I went through this recently and I was lucky enough to have outstanding service from my LBS and a bike manufacturer wanting to do their best for me.

I ended up with a pretty considerable upgrade for free.

After watching that video and reading the Cervelo response there is no way in hell I'll ever touch once of their bikes.

It's also a good ad for always buying new from an LBS.

^^^This is not a typical warranty situation and I seriously doubt that Cervelo would think that frame is acceptable.

There is a serious dieconnect somewhere that we are not seeing.

He should break the frame in a way to make it seem like a warranty issue, then send it back in for a new one. It's so bad, I bet it's a fake.

Cervelo should have apologized to him and told him to send it back. Some of the worst customer service I have ever seen, sadly, is in the high end bicycle business.

Newsflash for the idiots @ Cervelo: the customer is always right, even when you think they're wrong.

Not in this case. Had he bought used he'd have never bought the frame in the first place. And having bought from the LBS hasn't done much for him in the case has it?

My lbs is pushing Treks now. What's up with the trek hate? Are they really not good bikes? Seriously, before I consider buying one.

I dont know...my wife works at a Trek concept store. So when I was ready for a new bike, obviously I was getting a Trek. And Im on their race team, and friends with the owners so I get deep discounts. I was never a "Trek guy", but with the discount it was a no-brainer. Having said that, the bike is better than I expected. I really like it.

Needless to say I know a lot of people with Treks, friends, teammates, etc. I dont know of any of them having any issues with the frames...these are all high end madones, Im not sure about the lower models. And I spend A LOT of time in the store. And Im good friends with everyone there. We dont see the problems people think...sure, bikes break, including Treks, but no more than any other it seems. Im also friends with a few guys who work for and race out of another local shop that sells several brands, Cervelo, Specialized, and a few others. So I have a fair perspective.
