If you have a smooth pedal stroke without a lot of wobble, your feet shouldn't be skating around.

I recently bought some new Speedplay light action pedals for my new bike and I dislike them. Does anyone else feel like they are standing on ice when they stand to climb? They feel like I could slip right off the pedal cause they move around so much. Maybe I should have bought the adjustable ones.

I've had X-2 on two of my bikes for 8 years, got used to the "ice feeling" pretty quick, I don't have any issues with spinning, climbing, sprinting, etc... I got a commuting bike last summer, put on SPD pedals for better walking, but I like the Speedplays better.

I guess I will keep riding them and see if I get more use to the feeling. I just feel like I could unclip at any time even though I know its very unlikely!

I've never heard of anybody having that "unsecured" feeling with them.
Good luck.

Steve Hogg's take on the "skating on ice" complaint of Speedplays.
"I get a bit sick of first time clients telling me before a fit “I don’t like freeplay because my foot slops around”. If the rider is reasonably functional pelvically, and if their position is good and the amount of foot correction ideal and the balance of correction between arch support and wedging perfect, the feet don’t slop around no matter how much rotational movement there is. Limiting rotational movement (RoMo) to limit lateral knee movement is not generally a good idea. However, the Speedplay Zero can be adjusted to anywhere between zero and 15 degrees of RoMo."

ok, I have approx. 10 rides on the speedplays and I just can get use to them. I ordered some Dura Ace 7900 pedals yesterday since I know I already like the design from my old bike. I guess the speedplays will be up for sale soon!

I rode speedplays for 5-6 years or so, starting mid 90's(?).
Took some getting used to. What impressed me the most was the longevity of the bearings, those pedals are still turning perfectly smooth.
I got the Speedplays from a team thing, so I wasn't seeking the "floating" attributes, but as stated above, you get used to them.
I have disciplined ankles if you will, so even though the Speedplays have a ton of float, I never wore grooves in my crankarms (from the shoes). I still might occasionally blip a chainstay with my heel after my form went to Hell from some deadly climb, and I was totally smoked.
I actually prefer very little float, and have been running the Campy Record Pro-Fits for a long while now.
Forgot to add- I hate cheap pedals (poor durability) and the Speedplays are super durable articles. That being said, you can dial the new versions to zero float, so you can't go wrong there. I run the Campys because they never die.

I've been riding with the X2s for as long as I can remember. They have been low maintenance and the float is very forgiving with my bad hip.
