Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

"Spuds" is a very common term for SPD pedals. I hear it more from MTBers than Roadies, but then MTBers use "spuds" more than Roadies do, so I guess it all makes sense.

Does anyone recall the April Fool's ad that Speedplay took out in VeloNews one year? It was for Spudplay pedals, and it pictured a pair of potatoes with the Speedplay spindles attached to the sides of the potatoes.

(Seriously.)

Xpedo's = Speedos?

I'm all for dorktastic nicknames.

I rode with a guy a while back that insisted his speedplays were "lollipops"

I'm going to say no to the spuds for SPD pedals, but my wife does call potatoes 'pots,' which means we boil pots in a pot to make mashed pots... go figure.

I had never heard them called that...is this a common/accepted expression (like 'tubies' for sewups)? Or is the dude just wacky?
One of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

Just sayin.

I've been calling them spuds since 1993-94 when these first came out.

I second this BIG TIME! coming up with new terms and contractions etc, is human nature and if you understand what the other is saying why worry. Each group has it's own sub-culture terms etc., if something is accepted within that group it's "OK".

I don't really see anything wrong with calling SPD's "spuds," it's kinda cute. I am really a live-and-let live kind of guy. Usually.

OTOH calling dura-ace "Dura-Achee" is not cute. Just moronic.

Language is also not a static, dead thing.

Arguing linguistics on BF? This has to be a new low for me....

neologisms are often adopted as part of the language. OTOH, they are one of the first signs of impending dementia
