Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike Transport

I am living in NYC right now and have my competition back back in DC (I am a college student), I need to get my competition bike back up in the city and I do not know the best way of doing this.

My worries are the damage that may occur if I ship it through amtrak, grey hound or other services. Is there any place that specifically special ships bikes for a decent price?

Any help is much appreciated

I took my bike on Amtrak from Orlando to NYC. We both arrived in good shape, just as we left. Exercise due diligence in packing your bicycle and you should have no worries on the train.

If you're going to be bringing it back and forth regularly, you might want to think about investing in a hard case for the bike

Trico hard case

It's an investment for someone like you who competes.

Could you have a friend come visit and bring the bike with them?

Otherwise, +1 to the hard case.

Is this a one-time thing? How do you get back and forth?

Colorado cyclist's bike case for $100 works well. Not as convenient as nicer cases, but will protect the bike fine if you're on a budget.

If you're really on a budget, and it's a one time deal, scrounge a bike box from your lbs. Pack carefully, with lots of foam and tape the box well on the outside.

Check with local LBS's. I know mine rents cases pretty cheaply (plus a refundable deposit). If it's something you'll only need on occasion that would be my first suggestion. If you'll be traveling regularly with the bike you'll probably do better to invest in a good case.
