Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I saw this listing on ebay, someone from the 41 asked him a question. Read the questions at bottom in link.....

https://www.ebay.com/itm/SURLY-CROSS-...14652004167325

actual question

Q: You ruined that bike by converting it to a fixie? What the hell's the matter with you anyways? Do you listen to independent music or something? Obviously that stuff is rotting your brain. Anyways do you have the original parts? Do you have the cranks and gear shifts and derailers (yeah i know i missspelled that but at least i don't ride fixies).

A: Hello, The bike is not converted to a fixie, riding it fixed is an option. The rear hub has a single speed on one side and a fixed gear on the other, so it is up to the rider if they want it as a single speed or fixed gear. Also, It can be built up with gears if one want to add them. I hope this clears it up the difference between riding it as a fixie or single speed. Good luck

I like how the guy responded, didn't even bite. Think the guy asking question thought he was still in the "hot or not" thread.

That would be my rationale if I suspected this.

A single speed cross bike has its place. I don't see a problem here. The bike seems well put together. Its not like some classic bike with the braze-ons hacked off. The seller probably bought it as a frame to build up as a single speed.
