Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Spoke PINGING

Hi, I finally put my new Reynolds DV3K wheels on my bike and went for a ride this morning(only 30 miles ) and I like how the cracks in the road don't seem so bad and the rear hub makes almost no noise.
But I did get a ping a few times from the rear wheel, I assume it's the drive side spokes as they are the only ones that cross each other..
Is this normal and how long does this carry on for ????

It's not uncommon, but completely wrong. The wheel wasn't tensioned correctly before you got it and it's likely out of true. Have your bike shop fix it.

Agreed. The spokes are pinging because they're probably twisting and releasing tension due to windup from the build. Were they built by reynolds or some custom builder? They'll need to be trued fairly soon.

Of course, skewers really sound more like a creak than a ping.

Every time I true/tension a wheel it pings on the first ride.

Then again I don't really know what I'm doing, so...

Any time you true/tension a wheel, it needs to be stress relieved. Here's a video showing how to do.

https://www.ehow.com/video_2363039_re...cle-wheel.html

A way to minimuze the need to stress relieve the spokes when you are true a wheel, is to overtighten a spoke a little and then back it off to release the stress.

The OEM Shimano wheels (R500, I believe) that came on my first road bike pinged like mad if I stood and pushed hard. Ping-a-ding-a-ding-a-ding-a-ding...

I really should have had them redone by a good wheelbuilder. I think they would have been fine.

Hi, still having a ping noise, I'm thinking it may have something to do with the rear hub. This is what I sent to reynolds, let me know what you think.
Hi, I noticed after I mounted my Reynolds DV3K wheels that I was getting a ping noise from my rear wheel. At first I thought maybe it was a spoke unwinding but the wheel is very true and It kept on happening, so next I tried a couple different skewers , still getting the noise, I even switched to my old rear wheel to confirm that it was the wheel and not the bottom bracket.
What is happening is after I coast and as soon as I start pedaling again I get a ping noise but it only happens 4/5 times on each ride (avg. once every 10 miles). The wheels only have 470 miles on them. My feeling is that it has something to do with the rear hub.
What do you suggest my next course of action be?

Carbon wheels can also make a pinging noise when shifting - the vibrations will echo through the hollow carbon.

And based on your follow up post, it could be the freehub re-engaging causing vibration that is then echoing through the wheels.

Be sure to check the valve stem to make sure the nut is tight- when I got my new bike the front wheel made a noise that sounded a lot like it was coming from the hub. Turned out to be a loose not on the valve stem rattling around. Saved me a trip to the shop
