Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Such a bummer about this frame...

I got this bike for free actually and eventually I found out why they just got rid of it.

The head tube is cracked both on top and bottom.

I have this bike stripped completely and the frame is just hanging in my garage on the wall. I take it its not fixable and not even worth trying??

I really like the frame. What do you guys think about it?

Bikes: good ones.

Take pictures of the head tube cracks.

I'd say you might as well convert and ride it. If it is structurally sound, you would definitely get more enjoyment out of it if you rode it as opposed to leaving it on the wall.

There are two cracks maybe guarter inch each, one on top and one on the bottom of the tube where the fork goes in and comes out. Ill try to get a picture on later.

LMAO.

Yeah, because head tube failure won't hurt. Toss the thing in the garbage (after smashing it up/making it unusable).

Depending on the cracks, it's not ridiculous to think that perhaps they could be drilled to prevent further cracking, and welded up by an experienced welder.

By the time you're done paying for the repair, you may as well just buy a low-buck frame with horizontal dropouts.

Even if you find a welder willing to work on it, it will still probably have a deformed head tube and weak spot at the welds.

Bikes: Too Many

Not worth fixing. Hang it up and enjoy it as art. You have all the parts, a road frame can be found for a couple of hundred.

Weigh the costs - new frame vs re-weld vs losing your whole face on the pavement - then decide...

I'd buy a decent frame and stick all those parts on it.

Bikes: Fixie

Cracked frames are sold on Craigslist all the time and the seller assures the buyer that the crack is "stable" and is "ridable" ...so check if it "stable" and make sure its "ridable"

but really: toss that ****

Bikes: officially too many now...

fixing cheap aluminum isn't worth it. and I don't play around with fatigued or failing aluminum.

get a nashbar frame and be happy.

check the road marketplace. there are typically great deals on frames of various sizes in there.

I second this. You got the bike for free after all. Spend a little time doing your homework on it and you could end up with something a little nicer without having spent too much.

Throw that stuff on a nice frame and ride the crap out of it. Either carbon or Ti. Might need a headset or a BB adapter but whatever. You have a nice mid-range bike for about a grand. How awful.

Nashbar frame also a good idea. But I don't think it's worthy of 6500. That was a pretty decent group set.

You are correct. I was assuming it was all 6500 based on the crank.

Nevermind my previous post. It's all trash. Wanna ship it to me? I'll pay for the "disposal fee".
