Girl stepped up her bike swag
My girlfriend finally got her new bike. Went from an '11 Trek Lexa sora(read: heavy ass hog) to a '12 Madone 5.2 Ultegra. She loves the ride. It's responsive, it's light and it's sick looking! She's pretty competitive and hated getting dropped because her previous 9 speed was a pig and she just couldn't pedal hard enough to keep up. I didn't have my bike when I rode with her, I was on the shops test roubaix, but she was hammering and loving every second! Can't wait to put some mileage down with her!

I'm happy that she got a new bike. Really. But you can't say that her 6 month old bike with Sora was a "pig" and needed to be replaced just so she could keep up with you. C'mon, man. Looks like you fell hook line and sinker for some advertising.
Congrats on the new bike though. That's a nice one. I just hope it lasts for more than 6 months!

feel fast, go fast. feel slow, go slow.
I agree in principle that the Trek Lexa Sora wasn't holding her back, but it could have been a crutch. With a fast bike now she might feel more competitive and thus be more competitive.

^^ I agree with most of that. I just have a problem with the blanket statements and assumptions in the OP about how Sora automatically turns your bike into an incapable slow pig
I mean, I ride 4 year old 8-speed that probably goes faster than both of those posers!

It wasn't the bike, but you know that. That many spacers and a riser stem? Looks like she should have gone up a size, maybe it's just the pic. Congrats on the new bike.

Those are indeed better photos. But you should leave a blank line between them when they post, so the bottom of one doesn't run into the top of the next. The whole presentation will look better.
PS - Congrats to the GF on a nice bike. Hopefully she'll enjoy it.

I didn't say your 8 speed made you slow, hers being a low end WSD means her gearing made her cycling inefficient...
I rode the Madone and actually liked it, but it doesn't matter what I like or don't like, she rode a few frames and fell in love with the ride quality and overall smoothness of the ultegra over her sora. That's all that matters

Agree that 4 pounds makes very little difference. Sometimes I get confused that I can go just as fast with a 10 pound backpack.
At 4 pounds we're talking 1-2 watts on avg if that.

No, you're right. I can agree with that.
LOL. I can't ride with you. I probably wouldn't be able to keep up, and then I'd have to think about getting a new bike! As of now, I'm happy with what I have, so I don't want to risk it.
Makes sense. I actually changed some of my gearing because I hated my triple.......and the fact that I can't leave anything alone. I've got a mix of Sora and Tiagra now, but I have a secret weapon........I used a 105 BB.
