Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well, the Cirrus also has CAPS. And you know, a 180 knot cruise speed isn't all that shabby for an everyday airplane with fixed gears.

I really haven't looked at Lancairs in a long time. I was actually pretty impressed with the Glasairs over the Lancairs. The one Lancair I took a ride in at OshKosh several years back felt a bit cramped. One of my favourite production planes to fly was the old Trinidad TB-20TCs. Those things were fast, had a wonderful cockpit layout and actually had pretty good usable load. I admit the 5psi pressurisation on the IVP has me intrigued. However, everything at this point is pie-in-the-sky. Some of these things were within my budget several years ago but well, let's just say that I too was a "victim" of the telecom tumble.

I so mourn the "demise" of the Starship 1. It was such a beautiful airplane. I did an ultralight design as part of a senior thesis project and used the Starship-1's planform as a base. I also loved the looks of the Piaggio P 180 Avanti.

Oh... and two bikes will fit in the rear passengers seats if you remove the wheels.
Screw this plane.......I'd go old school just like I do with bikes..... F-86 sabre! Nice little transonic military jet...

J/K nice plane.....sure beats some slab-sided old cessna you always see.

I wish I had a plane.......

Avanti is gorgeous, but well beyond any budget I will ever have. However, if the Avanti interests you, there is a small kit company currently working on the development of "Skyshark". It is a small kit verison of the Avanti with the twin engine Tri-wing design. Estimated cruising @253mph. Do a search for the Skyshark aircraft, I think you'll be impressed. However, estimated cost is around $220,000, so it is beyond my budget. I still think the twin Velocity is a possibility.

If not a Velocity, then I will go with Robert Hensley's new plane. The Hensley Wolf. I love this little plane. Slated for kit production in early summer this year. It has two four cylinder diesles. Yes, read that right, twin turbo-diesels. YIPPEE!!! Finally, someone with the sense to strive for efficiency, and twin engine reliability.

www.hensleyaircraft.com

I have emailed Ribert on several ocassions, and if I can't afford the new Velocity, then the Wolf is the next on my list. Besides, he is a really nice guy, and has a great idea. I recommend you check it out. The cost of the Wolf is about the same as most single engine planes. But, the efficiency, cargo capacity and range is far superior to any single engine out there now.

Well, it's not like that SR22 was for the budget-conscious either. It's all out of my pricerange but I still can dream. I'll check out the Skyshark.

I remember about 15 years ago reading up on new all-composite diesel aviation engines. I'm glad to see someone throwing them into production aircraft now if even in kit-form. Yes, it's about time.

I have a 2003 Volkswagen Golf GTI VR6. Intake, Exhaust, Cams, Suspension. Its an insanely fun car, I used to be really into the whole high-performance car thing. At sea-level my car has about 220-230hp, its really fun - now its become the utilitariam hatchback for my cycling addiction. It now still has all the go-fast gooodies, but now I put on a Thule Roof Rack with aThule Velo Vise Fork Mounted bike rack. I also have a Thule Wheel-On to put the front wheel up on top of the roof next to the bike. This rack is rock-solid, and I can even go in most parking garages. My car is lowered about an inch (and is not a tall car to start with) even with the bike on top the total height is about the same as a big SUV (and I know some of them won't go in some parking garages, but whatever - I'm careful about it.)

Ok, but where the heck does the bike go. And BTW, the Velocity is not over the top. It is in fact, going to be a reality.....someday.

'93 Ford Taurus SHO with bike rack that sits up on the trunk lid. Carries two bikes with front wheels thrown in back seat.

I like the fact that the bike(s) is(are) kept above the trunk, so if you get rear-ended your bikes are OK. And they sit low enough that the bikes won't be decapitated when you drive into a parking garage.

I was only kidding as well. I do admit, if you removed the front wheel of your bike, you could jury rig a rack behind the cockpit of your car, and have a QR just behind your helmet for the front fork. That would look interesting going around the track.

And $200k for a bike transporter? Yep, my bike deserves it.

With both wheels off, I can stuff my road bike into trunk of Honda S2000. Lid doesn't close, but bungees nicely. Wheels go in passenger seat. Barely leaves room for water bottle.

I usually use my F-150. One bike can lay down with the wheel on. When I transport multiple bikes I flip them over onto the hadle bars and seat and secure them together. Same problem as the origal post when it comes to gas milage.

Several bikes will fit in the the family van (Chevy Venture) with wheels off. Also have a trailer hitch mounted bike rack which will fit 3 bikes and have borrowed a roof mounted rack that fits 2. Van gets way better gas mileage - 25 to 27 on the highway.

Yakima baby! I have '97 Montero Sport with 2 Yakima Steelheads on top. I don't know why you would go any other way. I have noticed a difference in gas milage yet either. Maybe I'm just not paying much attention though.

I drive a 2003 mitsubishi lancer, on the rare occasion i have to transport my road bike, i use a regular trunk rack, But mostly my mountain bike gets carried around on it and i have the paint scuffs to prove it. Maybe im mounting it wrong, the front wheel usually rubs all over the place. I have'nt had to move my road bike since purchasing it, i usually ride it where i need it to go... If i moved it, i'd use that to.
When I pay off the lancer next year, I may consider purchasing something a little more rugged for moving mountain bikes around. Maybe a ford escape, or even a ford explorer.

V6 3.8

only has 104000 on the clock and a complete service history, though it does need some work that would cost more than the car so it may get retired this year.

Only use it for running around wife & I work close to each other so we use 1 car for the commute.

I use a 94 Mazda Miata, with a homebuilt receiver hitch, and a Delta 1.25" hitch rack. The Delta carries the bikes on their wheels and only clamps around the seatpost, so is very gentle cosmetically. Very kewl!

Are you talking about the Delta BikeHaul? It's very similar to my Hollywood Teamrider. Both secure the bike the same way... by the wheels and seatpost. Did you get the optional bumper? Also, it seems that Delta no longer produces the BikeHaul much like Hollywood discontinued the Teamrider. Shame really as I think those were the two best hitch racks on the market.
