Am i the only person who take nutrion very lightly here? i eat chocolate or cookies or Paula Dean style food after my rides, and chose between soda and water. also mcdonalds = best after race meal ever.

I'm not sure I take it lightly...I just don't take it all that seriously. As my mama taught me..."moderation in all things". After a 4-5 hour ride I'll pretty much eat whatever I feel like eating...I try to limit the fat and include proteins and carbs. That's about it. Pre-ride I'm sure to eat something that will stay with me for a while...whole grain cereal, banana, oatmeal and then make sure I hydrate and eat well on the bike. I've had bad days on the bike due to poor hydration/nutrition, so I don't take that as lightly.

i'm also 16 if that makes a difference in how i handle nutrition :)

now where were those cookies my mom bought?

After a long-to-epic ride, I may indulge in Circular Food Module. It's good cold too, I have several segments of cooked Circular Food Module on standby in my Dual-Mode Thermal Stasis Chamber right now. It contains all four food groups and is easy to prepare, but it does generally contain a fair amount of fat, so it's best used in moderation.

Anyone try accelerade as a recovery drink? I believe it has protein in it, pretty cheap if you find it on sale. Curious if it works at all.

Over 40 years of cycling, over 300,000 miles. Have never used a recovery drink.
Eat/drink what you like.
At age 80 still getting in 100+ miles a week. My drink on the bike today at 100 degrees here in Arizona? WATER!
Pedal on!

The next thing to replace is BCAA. There are some protien drinks out there that will do the trick.

Both should be taken as close to the end of training as possible.

The next step is a proper meal that isn't packed full of excessive carbs. Your body can only store so much so extra just gets stored as fat. The correct amount you'd have to calculate yourself.

Then sleep. The hormones needed to stimulate recovery are only released as you slip into sleep so sleep is important for recovery.

Me and a couple of others did five centuries in as many days this week, and what you posted Bob is completely consistent with what I experienced. But instead of Coke, I swigged a quart of Pedialyte followed by Gatorade followed by the meal. It really kept me feeling good each morning and I'm no kid anymore. BCAA intake was consistent throughout the day.

Yeah I have been cycling (seriously) for about 30 years and I have never used any recovery drinks. On long rides I sometimes stopped for a quick chocolate bar but only when I got really tired

a1penguin 04-23-12 03:26 AM

I don't drink milk and I don't eat meat. I have a bottle of Ensure when I return after a long ride. I make sure I have protein at dinner instead of pasta.
