Recovery Drinks

Hey guys! I was just wondering what you guys use for recovery drinks. I know chocolate milk is a popular one, but it just does not seem to help me that much. The Hammer recovery drink works great, but it is pretty pricey.

Currently I am using a protein shake from Trader Joes. It contains very few carbs(11 grams) and 17 grams of protein. I have been looking online and I read that a recovery shake with more carbs is better than a shake with more protein.

I found these two on Amazon for a reasonable price:

http://www.amazon.com/Mikes-Mix-Reco...5059004&sr=8-2

http://www.amazon.com/Pacific-Health...5059019&sr=8-2

Has anyone tried these? Is it worth the price to get these? Do you guys have any other recommendations? Thanks!

I drink Ovaltine. The original malt in the yellow container. I have no idea how well it works, but I really like it :)

Endurox. Great recovery drink and realy helps with soreness later in the day.

Jack Daniels.

testosterone chaser.

Documented results; just have to be careful how long you leave the patch on.

You could mix the protein shake with chocolate milk to boost the carbs. I do something similar, I mix some Hammer Recoverite into chocolate milk in a waterbottle and shake it up (a blender would work better, but I don't have one). I don't know how much difference it's making in my recovery, though.

After intense exercise your body will accept any simple sugar, without an insulin spike, and use it to replace carbs. I use a can of coke.

The next thing to replace is BCAA. There are some protien drinks out there that will do the trick.

Both should be taken as close to the end of training as possible.

The next step is a proper meal that isn't packed full of excessive carbs. Your body can only store so much so extra just gets stored as fat. The correct amount you'd have to calculate yourself.

Then sleep. The hormones needed to stimulate recovery are only released as you slip into sleep so sleep is important for recovery.

I use Iced Coffee, half pint milk, sugar, coffee, protien powder (the only one I can find that doesnt go straight through me) topped up with cold water. Follow that with whatever water i need to replace what I lost while riding. Sometimes (if im really burned out) I will stop by the petrol station on the way home and get a ready made Iced Coffee which has something like 50% more sugar than coke, but also has some protien. I dont know if thats good for me but it sure works

+1. I use Endurox R40 if I feel I need to take anything. It works really well for me. It's not exactly "cheap", but it's in line with most everything else, I guess.

Did anyone see that programme about food on TV a short while back. They got a team of rugby players to half drink their usual energy drink and half to drink milk after a match.

Guess which ones were shown to recover faster with far better muscle recovery ??

Yep... the milk by a large margin, just plain old milk

Another alternative is a meal replacement drink, like Boost. They typically have the 4:1 carb/protein balance that is supposedly ideal, plus about a third of the RDA of vitamins and minerals. Plus, they come in chocolate. :) I use the generic version Wal-Mart sells.

Bob D's advice is (as usual) excellent as well.

Low fat chocolate milk.

travelerman 04-22-12 06:48 AM

What seems to work the best for me is a drink made with 12 oz. 2% milk, one scoop chocolate whey protein (24 grams), and one tablespoon Nesquik... I down that and eat an apple - the sugars in apples are wonderful for quick glycogen replacement - within 30 minutes after every long-ish ride.

As always, YMMV.

+ 1.

Chocolate milk has been a "recovery drink" since long before the term "recovery drink" was marketed.

In all seriousness a beer ain't bad either. I prefer stouts or if feeling contrary, wheat ales.

30$ if you can find it on sale, for the results it's deffinately worth it. I don't like the taste but you get used to it.

dstrong 04-22-12 10:11 AM

Yesterday it was a Chik-fil-a Charbroiled sandwich washed down with a chocolate shake.

Now that would be awesome, sucks that we don't have any nearby.

Looks like most of you guys recommend milk, unfortunately it makes me really queasy for some reason, so I avoid it and it does not seem to help me. I guess I will just try the Endurox R4 since I can get it for $30 at a nearby store.

Biscayne05 04-22-12 10:19 AM

5g creatine

I'm not sure I take it lightly...I just don't take it all that seriously. As my mama taught me..."moderation in all things". After a 4-5 hour ride I'll pretty much eat whatever I feel like eating...I try to limit the fat and include proteins and carbs. That's about it. Pre-ride I'm sure to eat something that will stay with me for a while...whole grain cereal, banana, oatmeal and then make sure I hydrate and eat well on the bike. I've had bad days on the bike due to poor hydration/nutrition, so I don't take that as lightly.

jsutkeepspining 04-22-12 01:06 PM

i'm also 16 if that makes a difference in how i handle nutrition :)

now where were those cookies my mom bought?
