Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Helmets - on a bald head

OK, so the chemo left me bald....for now. There was a glimmer of hope that the hair was coming back, but then that fell out too. I think there is a residual battle going on and the chemo is still winning. It's ok, though...I have faith the hair will eventually prevail.

What I'm finding, though, is that a helmet is uncomfortable on the bare noggin'. For those of you who are follicle-challenged too, what do you do? Get used to it? I hear wearing a cycling cap is definitely FRED if you aren't racing (not that I care!). I don't own any. I may just throw on the dew-rag that I used to wear under my brain-bucket motorcycle helmet. Other suggestions?

I saw a show last night that people undergoing chemo wrapped in cold head compresses. Helped them keep their hair. Not sure if it would help you re grow yours. Man you've been through hell...Nothing but best wishes for you Joe!

I learned in another forum that you can regrow hair by taking special vitamins and having scalp massages.

I wear a Halo skull cap under the helmet. It helps absorb sweat and keep it from dripping into your eyes as well as keep the dome from getting tiger striped from the sun through the helmet vents. I wear them year 'round.

I'm probably weird but I prefer the way a helmet feels when my head is shaved compared to when I let my hair grow out a bit.

Do rag oughta work, but if you wanna get nice here are some nice under armor do rags and hats that work well under helmets.

Thanks WHOOOOSHHHHYYYYY. I appreciate the well-wishes, but I'm doing well. No, the past year was not fun, but we all have things that aren't fun in our lives. How you deal with it is what makes or breaks you. At this point, I've beat it and am back to riding. I'm not riding as much as I would like, but we're working up to it. Besides, it's nothing a new Lynskey can't fix!!!

Hmmm....I could go for a nice scalp massage. The one service I think the hospital needed to offer was a massage service. Laying in bed for 6 days at a time STINKS! And NO, I don't mean THAT kind of massage!

Had not considered the sweat band effect as well as the sun-stripes. Added plus!

That's all that needs to be said! J/K man. Maybe I'll get used to it. I plan on keeping the hair trimmed tight when it grows in. Maybe that 1/4" will be just enough.

Bottom line, if this is my biggest problem....I'm doing just fine!

Awesome attitude. And yeah, nothing a Lynskey couldn't fix.

My younger sister is also a cancer survivor. I did a cancer charity ride for her last year, and she's decided to do this with me this year - she bought an Argon 18 that she absolutely loves.

But back to the OP, I couldn't even offer my two cents except to say that at 47, Rogaine worked wonders for me.

Headsweats or similar. The Halo products are good, too, but the rubber strip in front sometimes gets annoying.

I've got a bald head and i don't wear anything under the helmet. I should though since my head is tiger striped from the helmet vents.

I've been shaving my head for about 8 years, and wear a cheapo Giro helmet with nothing under it and don't find it uncomfortable at all. Then again I never wore a helmet when I had hair, so I have nothing to compare it to. Much like wrr1020 I do get tiger stripes on my head though. I think you'll get used to it pretty quickly.

Halo cap or other to control sweat and prevent patterned tan on head.

I have an "extra wide part" down the middle of my head and I sweat a lot, especially in the warm months here in Florida. There are more expensive options, but a quick visit to the Army Surplus store yielded some cotton do-rags that, well, do just fine. They also keep the head warm in the colder months.

A cycling cap is a great option or put some extra foam padding in the helmet.

you'll get used to it. I wear a cap on 90% of my rides, especially nice when you take the cap off, and realize how cool (literally) you are

There's no reason to see caps as fredly. They were made for riding and not racing. I always wear one under a helmet when riding and often take it off to race (except for cyclocross season). If you don't want traditional cotton ones, the Pearl Izumi makes a great one out of nylon/Lycra that is über comfy.

I wear a BUFF under my helmets. In fact I wear a BUFF most all the time. Keeps my bald head warm in the winter and from sun burn in the summer. BUFFS are a wonderful piece of equipment.

Moisture wicking do-rag. I prefer the ones with the little rubber strip in front to prevent sweat from pouring into your eyes.

what's more perfect in the sun than a skull cap like hat with a little peak on the front?
for that matter...what's more perfect in the rain than a skull cap like hat with a little peak on the front?
