Bicycling Magazine Captures the 41

They did it in their most recent poll.

I particularly thought of this when 55% of respondents listed 'didn't clip out in time' as the most embarrassing thing they had done on a bicycle. I myself have never managed that. Maybe my long experience as a skier using release bindings (I started skiing in 1966) means I've always known that all I have to do to unclip from a bicycle pedal is rotate my ankle about 10º.

Discuss.

I haven't started a thread here in months. Don't eff it up, there may not be another for a while.

If by months, you mean month, then yeah.

You get out of your ski bindings by twisting your ankle 10 degrees? Weird.

WhyFi 04-27-12 05:24 AM

Have not yet managed a clipless fail, but I've come close.

LowCel 04-27-12 05:33 AM

I did my clipless fall on a mountain bike, not nearly as embarrassing. :D

ahsposo 04-27-12 05:59 AM

Clipless falls are over-rated.

gsteinb 04-27-12 06:00 AM

In the early days of clipless pedals when a (mt. bike) spd cleat would get worn it would become nearly impossible to release. I definitely tipped over in the woods due to that.

Interesting that "reading Bicycling Magazine" didn't make the list -- it's happened to me, but not in the last 30 years.

About 10 years ago, I fell over in traffic while trying to track stand with panniers. That was embarrassing. I felt bad about it because I scratched a car on the way down. The driver didn't even care about his car. He just wanted to make sure I was OK.

So where have you been?

StanSeven 04-27-12 06:29 AM

I rode past a dozen people waiting to cross a busy highway. At the last minute I realized I couldn't make it across and fell when I didn't unclip. Those dozen people went past me laying on the ground all smiling.

dnuzzomueller 04-27-12 06:35 AM

cant wait to see Pcad try out speedplays......

I had it happen once when the sole of my mtn shoe basically was so soft that the cleat rotated on the sole and I couldn't get out at a stop light, looked like a total noob.

What is so difficult about speedplays?

whitemax 04-27-12 06:38 AM

I didn't know anyone here admitted to reading BM.

If a mtn. biker falls in the woods and no one heard him, did he really fall?

StephenH 04-27-12 06:41 AM

Well, so far, the only fall due to not clipping out in time was also when I dropped a chain first, so it wasn't just a lack-of-thought issue.

As to the survey- the questions seem kind of lame. Which celebrity would I like to ride with? If I wanted to do that, I'd stay home and watch TV, not be out riding a bike.

Their image on the first page looks like a Fred Bingo card.

bikemig 04-27-12 06:54 AM

Been there, done that but it was with toe clips, straps, and cleats. . . . I remember laughing hard as I keeled over but I wasn't embarrassed.

Bibs splitting at the seam, jersey removed and tucked into bibs. Makes a tardy de-clip seem tame.

I tossed a pair of bibs a week or two ago. There should be a rule, if someone informs you that your bibs are getting thin toss them. If you are caught wearing them again everyone in the group is allowed to beat you with a frame pump.

You like the attention.

unionmade 04-27-12 07:35 AM

I think I fell 5 times when I started using clipless pedals last summer. The first was going up a hill in VT when my chain fell off, the rest at full stops. When I came home with the final bloody knee, my wife threatened to buy me knee pads. I will say that I felt a mixture of embarassment but also undeserved toughness riding 50 with dried blood all over my shin.

I think it's generally accepted that the first few clip in and out maneuvers can be a little difficult while the springs "break in." That's why I always do it in a doorway at home before heading out on the road.

Odd, I've never had any issues with them. :o
