bought a 1st bike for a friend
Edit:Just to clarify, I did not buy it out of my own money and give it to him. His wife paid for it and asked me to do the shopping. I am not that generous
A new friend of mine is expecting a baby within the next week. He needed to be responsible with his finances so he wasn't sure if he couldaffod to get a new (New to him) bike. With a budget of $600 I/he wasn't expecting any kind of supersix or brand new high mod. I started searching CL thinking that I could find a used bike with better than bottom shelf components in that price range. Went to look at a couple bikes and they were just crap. Finally came across a Giant Defy 2 with Tiagra. Was asking $750 and didn't have a picture or size of bike labled. sent an email asking just incase. It happened to be the right size and he lived 5 minutes away. I went after work to look at it and I knew right away that if I could get him down on the price at all that this could be a great starter bike. After looking over the bike in more detail, I could see that there was spilled paint and nail polish from his GF. I knew I could get that off but didn't let him know that. The chain was covered in crap and didn't shift very good. I also knew that I could clean it and make some adjustments. Talked to him more about what would come with the price. In the end i got the bike for $650 which also included near new shimano shoes that ended up fitting my friend, shimano pedals and cleats, travel pump, fenders and 3 tubes.
I got it home and went to work right away. Washed it down, degreased everything, got off the paint and nail polish, polished and waxed, adjusted the bike generically to his height (was easy to do because he is the same height as me, but has shorter arms so we will need to make some adjustments). I was really happy with how it turned out. Super clean (now) and I think he will enjoy it for a while until he gets upgrade'itis.
His wife contacted me about helping her find a bike for him 3 weeks ago. He had no idea that we were communicating let alone looking for a bike for him for his Bday. After getting the bike ready we found anight that worked to bring him over to my place. He is a new friend and never been to my house so it worked perfectly. She told him that she had to buy something for the baby from CL and needed his help and security. They pulled up and she called me saying they were just outside. I opened th garage door holding his bike. He jumped out of the car and started screaming like a 16 year that just got their first car. It was a great reaction. Anyway, here is the bike. I hope to be riding with him this weekend.

Didn't Giant have a fork recall on the Defy? You should check into that for him.

Nice score!!!
$650 for a 2011 Defy 2 is a really good deal.
I'm hoping mine turns out as nice as his, only difference is I'm building mine up with Dura Ace group.
I got my frameset for $160, & spent the $$$ I saved on the Dura Ace group, all I need is wheels now.
Good karma is coming your way!

Wow. You are very generous! That's a great looking bike. What goes around comes around, bianchi10. May this be the beginning of a lasting friendship. I hope the baby thing goes well.

The frame feels about 2.5-3(max) lbs with my stem, & carbon fiber handle bars.
I can always used the components on my next build, this is after all my first build, & will mostly be used as a trainer.
Or I can flip if for a nice profit too, around here Defy 3 with Tiagra/Sora(or lower) go for over $1100 easy.
I don't want to go with a carbon frame just yet, I need to trim down my collection before I go all out.
My biggest fear is a scratch that will make it a complete write off. I heard many horror stories of similar cases.
After a year or so learning all the "ins & outs" of this sport, I'll be part of the carbon crew.
BTW:
I was able to get my DA for Ultegra/105 prices, I have a few contacts that are in the industry.
They'll hook me up with a Carbon frame when I'm ready too. My buddy just offered this frame to me since he upgraded to carbon. He needed to buy a new pair of pedals.

2010 Giant Defy 2: $1000
https://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/nv...012971126.html
Defy 1 with 105. considered a deal up here: $1299
https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/990691/
Giant Defy Advanced 3: $1700
https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/974562/
2009 Giant Defy Advanced: $1500
https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1075613/
@ these prices I can get a really nice bike for new in the US, you should see the prices of the "higher end bikes".
https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1050038/ ... https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/895265/
My friends from US always wonder why we get jacked up here?!? If I didn't have hook up, I'd be shopping in the Us way more.
Even if I buy in the US, pay duty fee, etc it's still quite a bit cheaper, & we don't even live that for from Seattle.
I can usually get stuff shipped to Point Roberts, & pick it up by car.

Just found this.
https://www.bikeradar.com/gear/catego...efy-2-12-45687
I guess i wasn't very far off on my guess, not even 0.5 lbs off.
1.5 kg = 3.3069 lbs
Yes my stem is heavy, it's just for mock up purposes, but my handle bars are light as a feather.
They're full carbon, not aluminum wrap carbon.
& I do agree the bike built up to factory spec is pretty heavy.(Sub 20 lbs)
I already stated this is for training, I like to do distance riding, & lots of climbing.
If i can rip up hills on my CX it's going to be easier with the Defy, & even easier once I go carbon.
We all benefit from all the hills, & mountains we have up here.

Frame: Extensively shaped and lightweight
Giant aren’t just one of the largest and most experienced frame manufacturers in the world, they’re also one of the most advanced. All this is very apparent in the new alloy Defy frame – impressive, given the price. For a start it has a tapered fork and head tube. While Defy bikes are primarily designed with distance and comfort in mind, the head tube isn’t so long you can’t get a reasonably aggressive aerobar-compatible position out of it either. The big tapering rectangular down tube underlines steering and power precision, while a super-thin, leaf-spring top tube adds vertical compliance without sacrificing twist resistance. The same logic explains the ultra thin, flat top to the seatstays while deep ellipse-to-square section chainstays keep your power well channelled.
As a sub-1.5kg frame, it’s already a premium piece for the price, but there’s also a lot of practical detailing on the bike. Gear adjusters on the head tube side mean no cable rub and easy tension tuning. A riveted front mech plate saves the weight of a band and a twin-bolt seat collar adds security. Despite the super thin stays there are still mudguard and rack mounts for the commute to work and Giant produce their own set of low-profile guards specifically designed for the Defy. The carbon leg/alloy crown tapered fork is virtually the same as last year’s, but its weight and ride quality are still more than competitive enough to justify the rollover.

My 2010 Defy 3 with factory specs (Size M) is ~22.5lbs. I don't remember the exact weight (and I'm too lazy to weigh it right now), but it would have rounded to 22.5.

(With mavic cp22's )
I'll post a link when I finish my ride.
you said its 3lbs (3.3 lbs) max with stem and bars. That must then also include the fork, because how else would you mount the stem right? Is 1.5kg weight with fork too? I'm pretty sure thats just the frame alone with no fork or seat post. On my bike the frame, fork, stem, bars, and seat post come out to 2,257g or exactly 5 lbs and the bike still built out to 16.9 lbs with pedals, rival, and absolutely no lightweight parts. With Dura-Ace and a frame that is 2 lbs lighter than mine, that bike should build out to 14 lbs, maybe less.
I know for a fact my stem & handle bars aren't 2 lbs, I'd say closer to the 500 gram mark.
I was under the impression the weight was for the frameset.

You also helped ensure he'll enjoy the hobby with a proper fitting bike, & gear.
Too many time people are turned off of this hobby because they either have little knowledge, or bought a bike on impluse without know if it will fit them, or if the components are up to par.
You mos def deserve the praise you'll get in this thread.
Good on you bro, good people are a rarity these days!
P.S.
Sorry for the hijack.

thanks guys. no worries on the jacking. I thought it added to the thread so I wasn't concerned. I was just glad to see him happy with it. since he hadn't seen it or had any decision on color or frame style, I was concerned that he wouldn't like the sloping down tube or black and yellow. but with that kind of budget, there isn't much room to be to picky.

But YES... good deal on a serviceable bike! I'd still be riding mine if it weren't for fit issues (I'm pretty sure I should have gone a size down)... and getting a decent deal on a CAAD-10 Rival. I'm sure that once the fit is dialed in, he'll get far more than $650 of enjoyment out of it.
