Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Sports Reports - May 26/27/28

If I'm not mistaken, this is Memorial Day weekend in the US. Are you out riding events to celebrate? Maybe you're doing a long-weekend cycling tour? Or just enjoying the extra day to get a good ride in?

Tell us about your cycling this weekend. Post pics if you've got them.

Saturday - wintery here ... we'll see what happens in terms of a ride today. It's early yet.

losing my ass to the couch and new desk job. trying to relocate to a job I can bike commute to again ... or at least take a humane lunch hour and hit the nearby gym for a daily run and mid day shower.

You are not mistaken...it is Memorial Day Weekend. Bless all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

I'm traveling Sat/Sun to Houston, so I decided to do a morning ride, which I rarely do during the week. 23 miles, fast paced, lots of sweat, even at 8:30 in the morning. Commute traffic wasn't as bad as I thought it might be and I might need to do this again in the near future. I'm planning a longer ride on Monday after I put the flag out.

Big weekend of Memorial Day racing around the area. Started today with road races in Burlington, IA, followed by crits on Sat, Sun, and Mon. Made my 3rd attempt at this road race today (Cat 5) after crashing 2 years ago and flatting last year. Finished in 10th. Only Cat 5, but I still got my first cycling medal, so I'm quite pleased.

Did a 67 mile ride this AM, out to Otisco Lake and back. Weather should be good thru the holiday weekend, so plan to get out Sunday and Monday.

Today I did a decent 51 mile romp through the Santa Monica Mountains. The cool temps, never above 60F, were quite refreshing.

The past few weeks I have been exceptionally ill (some sort of virus) it has capped me at 50mi trips. I attempted a round trip commute this week (85mi total (42.5 each way)) and I passed out at work (took a nap)... I got a ride home to say the least. Anyway, figuring doing that again would be foolish so I did a short easy 8mi. today. At least I got a ride in.

Happy Memorial Day to everyone.

I rode in the hot summer weather, 90F and with an air quality alert for the area.

Really the only problem with the air is that when I took a whiff all too often I smelled someone's barbeque and it adversely affected my morale. Other than that, it was a fine ride.

Thanks to all who made the ultimate sacrifice, and thanks to our allies and friends the ANZACs, whose only problem these days, at least according to Chopper Reid, is that they all need to HTFU.

Mid 50's here and overcast, perfect cycling weather. Speaking of barbecue, I'd hit the halfway point on my 50 Miler (well 46-47, depending on GPS attitude) and was spinning through a quiet farm town at 0630, dead quiet, no dogs barking. Passed over a bridge and wham, got a full 2nd hand hit from some unseen ?farmer who'd clearly rolled a fatty to start his day. Pretty startling.

Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, Durango to Silverton, CO. I've wanted to ride that since I was a teenager in the early 80's. This was my first time (finally), but not my last! It was pretty hard, but a lot of fun!

I did a 56 mile training ride on the Muncie half-Ironman course this morning (just to do it; I'm not competing in the tri). Then Monday morning will be an easy 50 mile club tour of the area where I live at the north edge of Indy.

I did a pretend-I-don't-have-work-to-do sneak ride today. About 58miles and a bit over 6000ft (Carter Lake/Pole Hill repeat 2X) to remind me what I've been missing for the last week. Much needed and trying not to feel guilty. Sanity resorted... Now back to work slacker!!!!

I had hoped to report my first half-century since my return to cycling last year, but came up three miles short. The first 27 miles went great, but the return home was against some wicked head-wind gusts. I could have stretched it out another few miles, but was running late for some family commitments (yes, contrary to "The Rules", family comes first).

...plenty of prospective nice days left in the year to beat the 50-mile mark; as for the rest of the weekend, taking tomorrow off the bike, and will wait-and-see about Monday.

It has been hot here so I got in an hour ride yesterday and the same today. Tomorrow looks like rain so it might be a bike cleaning day ;P

I rode 40 miles yesterday in Southern Tennessee. South of Lynchburg and East of Fayetteville. It was a very hilly route with several steep but short climbs.

There was plenty of welcome shade along my ride

On a climb, I came upon this "castle tree".

I crossed the Elk river three times. Here are some canoeists about to depart.

I was very tempted to wade into this pool at an old mill site. It was 98 degrees in the shade when I rode.

My ride started and ended at another old mill but this one is still operational as a working museum.

Rode a hot and humid 55 miler yesterday with a little over 1600 feet of climbing. I wish someone had told me years ago this road riding thing was so much fun.

Rode 50 miles today and hopefully another 25-30 tomorrow. Hazy, warm in the low 80s and humid here in NNJ. Rainy too with some wicked storms periodically. Its been like this for a week now. No relief in site for another few days.
