I'm fairly new to cycling and don't understand bibs at all. Why do people wear them? Is there some sort of advantage to them?

You could always grow a handlebar mustache to complete the look.

Wish they made bibs with a slit....just like underwear.

Dressing like a flamboyant superhero is the POINT of all of this. Embrace.

Bibs w/no jersey look totally gay IMO. NTTAWWT, of course.

You never know. He may do 1,000 miles a week. He may have started out at 450 lbs and is now down to a svelte 300. There are a ton of really inspiring stories in the clyde/athena forum of people who have lost a ton of weight (no pun intended) through cycling. MAYBE this guy is in the middle of that journey. The socks and sandals have to go, though. There is no excuse, unless those sandals are SPD's.

bibs? Is that what they decided to call a leotard for cyclist?

Tuck the shoulder straps into your waistband ... presto, shorts that don't have a butt-crack ... no annoying shoulder straps and you can take normal nature breaks ... best of both.

Nobody mentioned the socks & sandals? Nothing? I realize you have to wait for your eyes to stop burning to see anything else...

You can pull the front down on most bibs and pee without taking off your jersey. You can also pull the leg up and pee out the leg hole.
LMFAO!!! I've seen enough girls remove their bras without taking off their shirts, I knew this would come in handy some day! :innocent: I also have a few full zip jerseys I were on long rides, they help with the awkwardness of a "pit stop". |
I'll see your Lampre guy and raise you nonplussed bib dude:

Are bibs made for people whose bike shorts fall down all the time? |

Seriously.
Are bibs made for people whose bike shorts fall down all the time? Believe me, I was in the same camp as you guys not too long ago. Tried my 1st bib, & won't look back, they make riding that much better for me. I have the padded shorts, but I only use them to train in, they don't feel as comfortable when riding any longer than as hour for me. |

My understanding/experience is that they eliminate the waist band in shorts/liners which can get uncomfortable on longer rides.

Bibs are more comfortable. Do you wear tight lycra cycling gear because you think you look good? People think you look silly, whether you're wearing bibs or shorts. Bibs stop your chammy from riding down and stop the waistband feeling restrictive when you're breathing heavily.
Also, I have never ever had to take off my jersey or remove shoulder straps of bibs to pee. It's stretchy material, just pull the middle bit down. It will stretch far enough. |
I've always figured the straps would be an annoyance after a while.
Since my shorts don't move around, even on long rides, I don't know that I'd benefit from bibs. |
Much has been said about the benefit of bibs, but let it suffice to say that I know numerous people who have gone from shorts to bibs, I don't know any who have switched back.
- Wear the straps under everything but your HRM strap and base-layer (if any). - Wear something over the straps. (Women's bib issues are a bit different, but consult (at your own risk) the Assos catalog or this blog post http://comingthru.com/2010/10/cold-w...-your-friends/ for examples of them being worn) |
I have both. I have used some very nice Castelli and PI bibs. They work, but so do shorts. In fact my cheap performance shorts work fine for me. The big thing is the wear. After a year or two all shorts get frayed between the chamois and leg and they get move to commuting/short rides.
Also, for riding, I wear the bibs over a base layer in the winter. The straps hold the base layer down and makes a warmer ride. Of course I have a jacket over top, so no one knows that I am violating etiquette ;). |
