I have both. I have used some very nice Castelli and PI bibs. They work, but so do shorts. In fact my cheap performance shorts work fine for me. The big thing is the wear. After a year or two all shorts get frayed between the chamois and leg and they get move to commuting/short rides.

Also, for riding, I wear the bibs over a base layer in the winter. The straps hold the base layer down and makes a warmer ride. Of course I have a jacket over top, so no one knows that I am violating etiquette ;).
