Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

i need help

I ride a defy 5, its my first bicycle and i just love it. My question is I'm training for my first century so should I buy a more expensive bike or will my current bike handle the 100 mile ride?

Your bike is capable of going a century with no issues. You might want to have the dealer check it over and tune it up the week before, but there's no reason to buy a more expensive bike.

I did a metric century on my singlespeed earl... Only suggestion is to make sure that you're properly fit to it... otherwise you're going to be in pain at the end.

You happen to have one of the better bikes for centuries. At least one magazine has named it the best plush (i.e. long distance) bike on the market - within its price range.

For 700 bucks(perhaps less if your LBS gave you a deal) you've got a good endurance bike. The groupset(shifters, crank etc) are low-end but if they are working good, then you are fine. Maybe get em checked out by your LBS beforehand. Also of course have an emergency kit (couple tubes, pump, cellphone

If you don't finish by midnight it'll turn into a pumpkin! Hopefully you'll be fine... Good luck and enjoy it!

You'll be just fine with your bike. I've done numerous centuries on my Trek 1000, which is at about the same level as the Defy. The only thing that matters is whether you are in shape for it or not.

Granted, you'll go faster possibly with a better bike and wheels, but not so much that you need to upgrade just to do a century. If you have the willpower and physical ability to do a century, the Defy won't stop you from completing it.
