How much difference to shifters/derailleurs make?
ive been checking out new GT road bikes, series 3.0 vs 5.0. the only real ascertainable difference is the 3.0 has shimano tiagra shifters/derailluers while the 5.0 has shimano 2300 and microshift r82s. im pretty new to the game so im not sure what the difference would be. and im trying to find a deal online, so "checking it out" at a LBS might be hard....thanks!!

I would suggest avoiding 2300/Sora brifters if you can. They are only ergonomically functional from the hoods, and have a heavy downshift due to the short length of the lever. Buying a bike equipped with a groupset level as high as possible (against your need, or course) is much cheaper than upgrading to a better group later. Brifters, even used, tend to be the costliest part of the equation.

I'm in the avoid sora camp too. I rode Tiagra for 3 years. It's pretty durable and is just a good basic groupset to start with.

Tiagra works very well. Shimano routinely trickles down their tech, so today's Tiagra is in many respects equivalent to 105 from a few years ago, and Ultegra a few years before that.
