Tiger balm before?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tiger balm before?

Tiger balm? Ice-e-hot?

I saw a few guys just plastering there legs with been-gay (joke!) type stuff before a ride.

Why before? Anyone do this? Does it help with the warm-up?

I used icy-hot once when I ran x-country. I guess the crazy buring cold from it took my mind off the other pain. I didn't like it, and haven't tried it for cycling.

I don't know why you would put Tiger Balm on you're legs before a ride. Maybe to help keep cramps at bay? I know that the Tiger balm is a mild muscle relaxant.

I use IcyHot to help warm up my knees prior to riding. It's basically an additional warmup such as stretching or taking a hot shower. Hope it helps.

Tiger balm is used to warm your muscles before a ride, Bicycling Magazine did a comparison on all the available products a few months back. Tiger balm scored ok.

I know it sounds old, but I heard Ben Gay is good for both before and after excersising. But, I personally don't use much of anything at all, neither before or after.

I find a good soak in the hot tub, and a couple shots of Makers' Mark on the rocks is usually more than enough to relax the muscles and kill the pain. (Tastes good too)

Back in Am. Legion ball, I used to rub up my lower back and pitching shoulder with IcyHot before stretching and starting my throws. I thought it helped me loosen up. OTOH, it may have been as much psychological as physical.

You'd probably get the same effect for cycling. I may have to try it.

My only advice in this thread is that you make sure you wash all that tiger balm off your hands before you feel the need to pee - don't ask how I know that.
