Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

thoughts on the value of this

I have a great opportunity to buy a 2008 Specialized Roubaix Elite Compact. SRAM Rival groupo with Fulcrum Racing 5 wheelset.

https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bik...rtcompactrival

I currently ride a 2010 Secteur with Shimano 2300 groupo and Alex rims. at 41, I am not winning any races, but I like and know the frame and the geometry, and I think I can get a little faster and efficient on longer rides with this bike. I do a few duathlons, and enjoy brisk 50 or more mile rides up to a century.

Guy selling says it has only 95 miles, and was originally $3200. being 4+ years old, I think there is some loss of value there, but want to see your thoughts on a good price being almost brand new. Not familiar enough with Rival to know where it stacks up with 105 or Ultegra.

Candid thoughts appreciated.

Bikes: '07 Cervelo P2C, '12 Specialized Roubaix SL3 Expert, 2011 Specialized TriCross Comp.

What is he looking to get for it?

for $3000 I just bought the Roubaix SL3 expert (upgraded carbon and full Ultegra) so he better be giving you a big discount.

I believe the 2012 Roubaix elite was selling brand new for about $2200 (some sites will list at $2500 but should be able to get for at least $2200 including pedals)

https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bik...ixelitecompact

I would guess that his bike would be worth about $1200-1500 depending on condition. But remember you'll have no life time frame warranty or LBS support with his used one

and yes, I believe you will find that it is a nice upgrade from your current bike. But I would consider getting a 2012 now while the sales are on unless this guy is giving a great deal to you.

It is mint, we settled on $1600, includes the cateye wireless with cadence. Let him keep the Speedplay pedals and the Specialized shoes. I like my 105's pedals and Shimano shoes. Test rode it tonight for a couple miles and it feels quite fast and quite comfortable.

Bikes: 2013 Specialized S Works SL4 Keyline Red

You paid too much my friend, I would of paid no more then $1000, their was a 2008 S Works Roubaix on eBay with a Buy it Now of $1200.00 w/ Sram Red, but no cranks or wheels. Sram Red cranks can be had now for less then $200, and 2011 Fulcrums for about 200.00 on ebay.

I bought the 2011 version of that bike brand new for $2350, IIRC. So, did you pay more that FMV for the 2008? Maybe... probably. But, so what, it's over now, and you have a new (to you) bike at an affordable (to you) price. Ride it.
