Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Underneath shorts

What do you wear underneath your riding shorts? Spandex, boxers, briefs, nothing?

that spandex goes on the outside - tag and padding on the inside (and against your skin).

Wearing anything under the shorts defeats the purpose of the shorts.

Do yourself a favor and wear nothing underneath. The idea of sweat soaked cotton between my skin and the chamois....

I go commando but my wife wears her usual synthetic boy short undies with her bike shorts on top of that. However its important to note that my wife hasn't ridden more than 20 miles like that and she pedals slow so I think chaffing would probably not occur given those two factors.

Huh... I have a pair of mtb shorts that are basically road bike shorts attached to a pair of cargo shorts made of that waterproof material.

@OP - I usually wear jeans under my bike shorts. No one else does this?

Bikes: Lots

Nothing under cycling shorts ...

But that said, I've done some rides of decent lengths (even recently) in underwear and regular shorts ... no padding.

nothing, the padding in the shorts isnt mainly for cushioning, it is to provide 2 separate layers of material to reduce friction. one layer moves with your butt and the other slides on the seat, the padding isolates the two from each other.

I prefer to wear a lace thong, with boxer briefs, a pair of old bluejean shorts, then put my bib shorts over that stack.
