First Metric Century. Am I Ready?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Very nice! Not bad for 1 summer.

Yeah. Saturday's average over 103 miles was 13.6mph, but I was trying not to leave my sister behind. I wanted to go faster the whole time, and finished without too much discomfort. Terrain was almost entirely flat, with clear weather and only a little wind. Sunday, I was solo, though I joined several groups during the ride. I even got into a paceline for an 8-mile stretch, which was really fun. I pushed to a 16.2mph average for the 51 miles, on flat terrain, with a good headwind almost all day. There was one stretch about 2/3 of the way in on Sunday, where I was all alone on a dead flat, straight section. I did 20mph+ for a good 10 minutes, and felt absolutely great. That is, until I got passed by a pro on an all-carbon, aero, somethingorother, like I was standing still (on my steel Fuji, lol). Nevertheless, I'm pleased with my performance improvement in only a few months.

Incidentally, my sister rode 103 on platform pedals the whole way. Hadn't touched a bike in a month, and had hardly trained before that. Impressed the heck out of me.

I also discovered fig newtons with peanut butter. Mmmm.

Glad you enjoyed it, it was a beautiful weekend for it this year! This was my 4th Breakaway to the Beach (been a few years since my last one), and while I finished the full 200, I had sit-bone blisters by mile 70 of day 2, which made the last couple hours less than pleasant. One ripped open by the end. I'm pretty sure I scared the people outside my shower as the sweat and sunscreen hit the open blister......... time for some new bibs.

I had a dude ride with me a while back. His first ride for years on a heavy old cheap mtb. We did 120km in 8 hours (riding as fast as he could manage) and he did it. A metric is not difficult. Just be sure to have plenty of water and eat something small every 15-20km and you'll do fine.
