Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Jersey thoughts

SO I am a week into this road bike addiction of which I know nothing about or the culture surrounding it. I am looking at jerseys and shoes now so I can try to blend in and not look like a total d bag to the regulars . What the he11 am I supposed to where for a jersey? Everything has some team or product scribbled across it and I honestly have no affiliations or reason to want something all across my chest/back. So, im surfing ebay and I am looking at what is out there.

What do you guys wear? What is acceptable to where? I like beer, should I have a Boulevard wheat jersey or some nonsense? I don’t know any bike products yet either, so I don’t want to try to sport stuff I just don’t know either. What say you, oh amicable 41 ?!

try on jerseys before you can buy them, or be able to return them.

DO NOT try on jerseys at a store, then buy online. ****** move.

tons of beer jerseys out there...

ride and wear what you like.

Try some Performance house brand stuff: https://www.performancebike.com/bikes...y=&searchTerm=

Most people find them a good value. Shorts & bibs too. And you can order online and send back what doesn't fit if there isn't a store nearby.

wear what you like. The forums rules only apply here on the forum not in real life.

The best to wear (IMO) is your local bike club jersey (after you join), race jersey (that you have completed), LBS jersey, matching bike manufacture jersey, or just a plain coloured jersey.

I know pro team jerseys are against the rules but many wear them. I have a Cervelo test team jersey (the team is now defunct so it looks like a brand jersey)

but seriously, no one cares what you wear, but Bibs are a must.

Just buy some Peral Izumi or similar jerseys. Most are pretty plain and are pretty good too.

USA flag jersey - many fewer problems with the good ol' boys driving pickups.

Actually there is a jersey type that you should avoid at all costs- replica "leader" jerseys like the TdF Yellow, Green, Polka-Dot, Giro Pink, etc.

Also National and World Championship jerseys.

Those have to be earned, not purchased.

Wear whatever is comfortable and with looks that suit your tastes. I know some people that like a t-shirt or singlet/tank top/sleeveless shirt made of technical fabric. I prefer to have a jersey with back pockets to carry stuff and a front zipper to adjust ventilation/body temp. Good luck and enjoy the ride!

I'm a HUGE Capo fan myself. They are local, and my one of my riding buddies knows the one of the owners (I see him near the top on a lot of local Strava segments). Can't afford the high end stuff unless its on sale, but when it is, I always snag whatever is left in my size. The Hincapie stuff that shows up on chainlove.com from time to time has always treated me well also. Voler isn't bad, but the chamois still haven't worn in so it feels very diaper-ish, but on the bike they are great.

I told myself this morning that it would be juvenile to post this and that I should let the thread play out and see if anyone else wanted to be juvenile. I guess it's up to me.

I have rather plain jerseys (one red, one blue), I have a jersey from my LBS, one from a ride I did (a metric century), someone at my company gave me one (it's kinda cool, there's not many of them, and everyone I know who rides wants one), and I picked up a really cool one in London that has a map of the London Underground system.
Of course I also have the requisite AZ Flag jersey, that everyone who lives here has to have.

I'd pick up 2-3 now, and you'll be surprised how quickly your collection grows.

(and NO, bibs aren't a must, wear whatever shorts or bibs work best for you)

+1 on nashbar. I have 2 louis garneau, a canari, and a bellweather that I like alot. the Nashbar branded jerseys are hit and miss, some I like others I dont.

I buy the ones that are either solid color or just 2-3 colors, no advertisement or complex designs.

on a side note, bibs and shorts, do not buy the house brand. spend the extra $10 when they're on sale. cavalo, dna/italica, exustar.
