Tire question
 

Any one have experience with the Maxxis Detonator F60 DC SW 700c X 23 Tire? I'm upgrading from the original Forte gt2 (non kevlar) 700c X 25 so I'm thinking anything will be better than those.

I haven't ridden either, but I believe both Maxxis and Forte tires are made by Cheng Shin Tire (CST). It doesn't mean they are the same tire, but depending on what your complaint with the Forte is moving to a Maxxis may not be the best solution.

I actually like the way the Forte felt, but its a super tight wire bead that has snapped a few of my tire wrenches trying to get it on and off and they don't fold at all. Recently I found a bubble in the sidewall so I figured I'd get some new tires. The GT2s are not sold any more and could be found as cheap as like 10 bucks a pair, so when I saw a $55+ tire for $25 on chainlove.com (gotta love that site) I figured I should pounce. plus its about 60+ grams lighter

I will never understand the concept of cheap tires. Conti 4000s will give you 2,000 plus miles with few or no flats why not get the best?

I have read negative things about the maxis, Id say Continental/ Specialized/ Vitoria are my top 3

just get some conti gp4000s and be done with it

Well then I'm assuming you have never been a broke college commuter with a dog, rent and other expenses to deal with. I feel bad for people who CAN buy the best and look down on those that CANT buy "the best"

Thanks for the suggestion 10 wheels, and thanks for not taking the 'spend all your money' approach, I pulled the trigger on the Maxxis tires already though.

Too late for this time, but you might consider going up a size or two, especially if you weigh more than about 150. I haven't found any disadvantages to 28mm or even 32s, and they're much more comfortable.

I didn't mind the 23s when I was first getting used to the road bike, the 25s that I've been riding this year are fine, but the construction on them is questionable, I figure I'd try the 23s again. I don't see much of a need to go any bigger than 25s

Any advantage to riding smaller than 23s?

not that I know of, I have ridden with some one that rides 22s but I've heard that increases rolling resistance (I could be wrong). I think 23-25 is my preferred range but then again I have never ridden 28s or smaller than 23s

I didn't like my Detonators. I prefer not to use cheap tires, but I'm told if you're going to buy cheap, something by Panaracer is often a good choice. I do know for a commuting tire, the Pasela is probably the best deal available.

We are talking about a maximum beta of $75. The tire will last longer and give you less flats don't confuse cheap with saving money. When you get a flat with the cheap tires and miss a class or miss work the savings will be negative. Save money by drinking tap water instead of a soda or coffee.

I agree. Now that I can afford them, I use either Vittoria Open Corsa Evo Cx or Veloflex tires.

When I was a starving, well just very poor, college student I bought whatever tires were in the sales bin.

I was as happy to ride then as I am happy to ride now. :D

There's an English saying: "I'm not rich enough to buy cheap things". And it is often true.

The OP didn't post "need advice on budget tyres". I used to live off very little money and always went for saving, buying good stuff (more expensive, but better quality, longer lasting) ONCE. Often turns out cheaper in the long run.


I'm riding Specialized all weather elite tyres. 23 mm. Asked at the LBS for a pair of tyres that can put up with bad pavement, debris etc, and they gave me those. 45 euros for a pair inc. inner tubes. Have been happy and flat free. The same LBS guy actually praised Maxxis tyres as quite good for MTB and 29er bikes.

I rode maxis detonators for a season or so, they were ok.

I paid $60 a pair on ebay, I didnt have alot of flats or issues with them.

One thing I liked was I could mount and remove them from my campy zondas without tools, thumbs only.

Eventually they each got cut and couldnt keep the tube in em without a boot.

I replaced them with the vittoria open corsa evo kevlar, ebay for $100 a pair. the quality is obvious in comparison but a pain in the ass to mount/remove.

id rather have crap in both hands than your outlook on life. honestly if you're going to make posts like that get off the thread before you make yourself look like an idiot. and i wasnt asking for a comparison, just if people had experience with maxxis. i rode the gt2 because they were free, I'll take free crap over paying top dollar any day... oh and after 950+ miles on the gt2 i had ZERO flats
