Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Additional analysis for Strava users

Besides the naff signature pic feature, this is well worth a look https://veloviewer.com

I have also built some tools around the Strava API. Since the API is not really public, and there are no developer keys, do you throttle yourself in order to not overwhelm Strava with API calls?

To do anything non trivial requires multiple calls. I have resorted to caching data, but most API providers do not allow the external storage of their data.

I only posted the link: the site has nothing to do with me. However, it looks as though veloviewer.com is caching the Strava data externally judging by the way the update mechanism is working.

Go to the sig editing page, click the add image icon (you know the little tree picture) and paste the image link from the site in the popup box.

(You just need the IMG tags around the https:// bit)

I put the thing in my sig! This is pretty cool. I am glad to see I am not last place in any of the segments Does it upgrade with each ride?

I've optimised the code as well as I can to limit the hits of the API but it still gets quite a battering, particularly in the initial ride upload. And now I've got nearly 3000 people on the site so their API usage must be pretty heavy.
I'm in dialogue with the guys at Strava a fair bit and they've never mentioned any problem with the level of API usage. I'm working with them on how I can move the site forwards with their V3 of the API and hopefully some new services will allow me to reduce the number of calls I'll need to make massively. They seem keen to support sites that want to use it and expand upon their own functionality as in turn it means people carry on using Strava that much more.
And yes, I do cache a lot of data and once again I've spoken with Strava to determine what they are happy with as long as I remove flagged segments and make sure it is the users choice that their data is cached then there hopefully isn't a problem. It comes back down to not storing or displaying data from people who haven't given permission.
I need the Strava Authentication interface to be in place before I can fully implement everything I need though.

Love your site VV! A couple of questions if I may?

I am a premium Strava member and upload cadence and heart rate data with my rides. Do you have any plans to add features based around those data? Even just having the option of displaying additional columns in the segment or ride lists would be useful.

Also, I stopped using the signature code almost immediately because the image URL contains your Strava athlete ID, which I'd rather not reveal on forums. Is there anyway you can obfuscate or encode the URL to make this less obvious?

I also have something to comment on. My stats below my signature are not updating after each ride. They have stayed the same ever since I put it in there? I think there might be something wrong because I heard they would automatically update.

I'm not really sure if I like the site or not yet. Not a whole lot of benefit to me compared to the normal strava site. Sig is kind of cool though.

Who's got the most KOMs? I need to hunt more now that it's in my sig!

You need to back to the veloviewer site and update with your new rides.

Huh? I think you need to explore the site a bit more! Look at your segment list. It's really easy to see which segments you're near KOM so you can go chasing them if that's your thing. Click on a segment and look at the useful stuff on that page, e.g. Race Shape, Segment history, elevation chart.

yep, it does not auto update. It does a lot of work to generate that. Neither Strava or Veloviewer want that running constantly for everyone.

I keep fairly up to date on which segments I know I'm close on. To me that's not really an advantage. I liked the elevation % grade chart, but it depends on the climb I am looking at, sometimes it's useful, sometimes it's not. I'm not saying I don't like it, I'm saying that there's just not a huge advantage to me using that on top of what I can already get from strava.

Hmmm...I tried putting it as my signature pic, but it says "invalid file."

Any ideas?

Don't put it in as a "pic".

Just copy the URL.

One of the options on the 'signature' tab is for bulletin board signatures. Just copy that straight into your sig.

Fingers crossed when the V3 of the Strava API is released next year they will expose heart rate, power meter and cadence data and when they do I'll add it in where it makes sense. Not currently available though.

I've added that to the to-do-list along with a few other signature image requests I've had. Will be a few weeks before I get round to adding any more features.
